A vertical passage underground or inside a building. In underground areas such as drains and utility tunnels, shafts provide access to the surface via ladders and manhole lids. In a mine, shafts can vary in size from ladderways to large elevator shafts. Mine shafts which open onto the surface or into horizontal tunnels can be dangerous to unwary explorers, since they are often concealed by rotten boards, vegetation, or old machinery.

Elevator shafts are found in buildings, and contain the elevator cars, cables, counterweights, and other equipment.

in many buildings there are also service shafts used for passing plumbing and electrical cables. IN montreal so called "pervert shafts" or "puits de lumiere" are heated shafts to allow light into bathrooms in the lower floors of buildings. in new york light shafts are larger and are out doors
