| | | An asphyxiant is a gas that, while having little or no toxicity in and of itself, can kill by displacing oxygen in a confined space. Examples include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, nitrogen, argon, halon, and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Many of these gases are heavier than air, and can collect in low-lying areas. A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is the only safe way of dealing with low-oxygen conditions.
