| | North American Hotel (Palace Pier) < on 5/7/2008 11:09 PM >
| | | FWIW: While working, I drove past the place yesterday, chain-link fenced with Lions Demolition signs all over it. It's called the North American Hotel, IIRC.
~2143 Lake Shore Blvd. W. (On Google Maps, it's just NORTH of the pointer.)
Googling turns up: http://hillcrest-motel.com 1-877-HILLCREST = 1-877-445-5273 (disconnected)

| | | Fences have been up for a few weeks. Lots of graffiti on the exteriors. There is another one right next door that is also fenced in. Probably putting up more condos in this location. Here's what it looked like last year.

| | | Too bad. Those little motels are gems. I don't imagine it will be too long before few that are left on that strip go the same way. Hillcrest four years ago:

| | | Isn't the Sea Horse Motel around there too? Back in the 1980's while working down town, my shift would end at 5:30am and I'd see all the hookers leaving that area dragging their soppy asses back to the city centre.

| | | Hah. I totally stayed at the Beach motel for a week about 8 years ago. Not a bad place but the decor was so depressing.

| | | Its been like that for weeks. Honestly I'm suprised they haven't flattened it as I went about a a month ago. The bathrooms were interesting, had nice tile work, and some odd artifacts sitting around. I did like the silver moon better.

| | | I read about said motels/hotels. A major land developer has bought/is buying all that real estate to build condos and town houses. Now is a good time to explore a lot of that. -Octane

| | | Similar things happening down on the other end, around the Burlington lakeshore (around Brant Street). It was a couple of years ago (at least) that I first heard Emma's Backporch had been sold to a developer, who was gonna flatten it (and the neighbouring, classic "cheesy motel") to put up a condo or two.

| | | Well, my girlfriend and I went today. It was an amazing day, I think we spent about 4 hours in/outside. Worth the trip..but I would go on a weekend while the "lions" guys are not working. The basement was dark but it had many items that made you go.."I remember when this was cool" Anyways, explore safe and it is worth the trip!

The Seahorse has been gone for easily five years. It used to sit on the other side of the underpass at the Humber loop. It's a shame all those "hooker row" no-tell motels are going cos as much as it's a seedy part of Toronto/Etobicoke's past it's still kinda neat to see the vintage circa 30's to 50's architecture. A friend's band shot a video at the Hillcrest once.

The eastern part of Toronto still has its version of seedy motels. They are largely used by Toronto to house all manner of rejected and dejected peoples. It starts roughly in the Cliffside area and goes all the way to the Pickering border along Kingston Rd, which used to be the only highway heading east out of town prior to Highway 401's creation.

I was down around there last October or so,and this ice cream bar, right beside Emma's Back Porch(presumably the same owners),was boarded up ridiculously tight.
The view from the waterfront back here was awesome, but once again, the building was a no go.
And just for fun,I'll throw in this one, which is a crummy shot in the front hallway of EBP.
I don't know if it's still there and of course I didn't take any pictures, but I remember that there was a sweet 50's style hotel just down the street, that was still open, but slated to be demo'd for the dreaded condos.

| | | I can drive if I'm not required to take the 401, but with the price of gas, I can't afford to do much driving. ... 401 scares meee. ... I don't know Toronto very well, so is that site fairly easily accessible by GO train, TTC bus or subway?
