wow, it is totally amazing how quickly old gems like this can go downhill because of assholes who don't appreciate it!

I made the trip for the first time at the end of september....actually walked all the way from the big dirt mounds (mental note, next time bring something other than an integra, lol). The walk was half the fun, and trying to get through the flooded out area was an adventure by itself.

So glad I saw it before it gets any worse. Hopefully it'll still be standing next year for a return trip.

We walked in from there as well... I love the walk, and lucky for us, someone had left boards which we used to cross the worst of the washed out roads.

It's seems to have gotten to be quiet a busy place... in the few hours we were at the prison, 2 other groups came and left...

Its definitively a cool place to go. It just sucks that its so hard to get to unless you have a nice decent truck or Jeep

Its almost a 5 km walk. I am not saying walking is good but I don't know of another location where you need to walk so far to get access. I drove up to the flooded part as in the first pic and that was a far enough walk for me with all my camera equipment.

ya it takes about 45 - 50 minutes to walk it.. about an hour on the way out because you're not as pumped as u were going in... but it's well worth it.

Walking cuts into precious photo taking time especially if you want to stop and look at some of the other gems like the cemetery.

Expedite your journey...

I find things have degraded rapidly since some group began taking kids up there for paintball competitions. Seems to have exposed a whole new generation of vandals to the place.

Perhaps the author wanted it to be disturbing, I don't know. I see only beauty in it.

The beauty of art is that it is subjective.

lol my thoughts exactly. I didn't even know there was a cemetery there but when I went, I left my house at 9 am, stopped at Nobel, stopped to eat and got there to the trail at 4 pm and to the camp at 5 pm, left around 6 pm and back on the hwy at 7 pm. If I had a beast like that, I would have had alot more time to check out the place rather then just walk around quickly and miss alot of things.

The cemetery is a lesser known location unless you worked/lived there. It contains the remains of approximately a dozen prisoners whose bodies were never claimed. The sad part is that there are no records of who these people were. At one point I had attempted to try to track down the records, but ran into a wall.

The photo below is rather old (35mm film from the year 2003) and shows the rotting wood fence which made up the exterior of the graveyard. I have other photos somewhere. My understanding is that today a memorial plaque has been put on the location.

Edit: added photo of crosses

Actually, to look at my notes, I did note down that there was a cemetery. I think its in the northwest corner of this location but I had no time to check it out. I am thinking of going back this weekend, if I do, I will make sure I have tons of time to check everything out. Thanks for the pics

When you turn off of Highway 69 into Burwash you can go left or right. Right, if I recall correctly, takes you to the shooting gallery where the targets are shown with distance measurements (although the map I have indicates different).

If you go left, you come to the railway tracks. On your way down that left road (the once "main street") you will pass many now abandoned locations... the sawmill, skating rink, school, etc. Nothing remains to this day except a few foundations, a fire hydrant and a very hard to find cross.

There are four lakes, but two rather stand out... Hall Lake and Cemetery Lake. Cemetery lake is the last one there before the tracks.

Before you get to the tracks, as you're walking to them, on your left are the lakes. There is a worn trail going into the bushes which stands out like a sore thumb. That is the cemetery path.

I haven't been to it for five years so I don't know if I'd even be able to spot the pathway, but it is just before Cemetery Lake.

And by the way congratulations on your Full Membership.

Fivepointsix and I were lucky, we had the whole day at Burwash, which is why we didn't mind taking the time to walk in and out.

Wow nice map. Is that something you drew up or something you found? If I do happen to go back there, I will for sure have to try to find it since it doesn't seem too out of the way.

Thanks for the congrats on the full membership, now I have access to alot and i don't even know where you start, lol
