oooh, there's close proximity Stealth Mode (low power for close stuff) and maximum Surveillance mode (full power.)

oh man it has a small video camera inside, serious hackable.

and might be good for IR photography shots too.

so much potential. these will be fun. well, until i break them by accident.

thanks for posting this. i am seriously night blind and usually skip night explores. this will help i hope. if not it will be, at minimum, very amusing, and i bet i will get a good steampunk shoot out of them.

God it kills me to say this, but for $50 its actually fairly decent night vision. Its basically a video camera set for IR detection. So one less filter or something.

Anyhow, once you get past the fisheye effect and having no depth perception they work fairly well.

I feel dirty now.

I saw a decent looking pair on Amazon for like $75 CAD.
I'm hoping to buy a pair in the future, they look pretty sweet.

...there is so much fail in that post that I don't even know where to begin

I ROFL'ed

However, for $50 more, you can buy a real night vision spotting scope. It may not be attached to your head, or look as totally friggen professional as this one, but it would work so much better in my opinion...
I however will just stick to a headlamp, or the trusty mag.

This place has given me so many neat video camera things, and now I can see all the weird people walking around my development (at night too, I am on an IR system) from any TV in the house, and the prices are usually great...

Note: You can see IR light with your bare eye, I don't know why people say it's invisible. It's invisible to see light from it reflected off of objects, but you can see the IR LEDs when they're on. They look just like dim red LEDs.

You cannot see infrared light with your bare eye. If you are using low quality infrared leds, you can sometimes see some red light, but the infrared light is by definition invisible. Also, don't stare directly at an infrared light emitter, as it can burn your retinas.

Sometimes I wonder if my obsession with flashlights led to my interest in Urban Exploration, or conversely, if my
interest in exploration led to my flashlight obsession

Technically, you can see some of it, It's just really really hard to. If you get an IR-only filter (or red+blue stage gels (certain types only, IIRC) ) you can see, very dimly, IR through it, assuming you block out all the other light.

But those LED's are just cheap.

And IR will burn your retina, even better than normal since your iris won't contract in response, but this is generally a concern for IR lasers, not LEDs.

Bought these for my son for xmas, found them on Amazon for $50 with free shipping.

They're decent for $50, they're not top of the line, military grade night vision. It's a toy, just as everyone said. But, given the fact that you're exploring buildings/drains and taking the chance of dropping them in puddles or from high areas, I'd rather damage a $50 item.

I saw these about 6 months ago at Toys'R'Us, but they were $80 at the time.

Do you think there would be any way to disasemble 2 sets, then put all the major components back together ina large pair of binoculars? You could tape an external rechargable battery pack to the bottom.

just a thought, then you could have 2 screens, and the IR LEDS where the lenses used to be, hack a dial into the side for the brightness function and there you go!

Now I've got that feeling once again, I can't explain, You would not understand, This is not how I am... I have become, Comfortably Numb...

It wouldn't be too hard to hack 'em into a binocular pair, but the viewing screens are so small you'd get mad tunnel vision. Not the best idea as far as situational awareness is concerned.

Yeah, but if you managed to mount them inside the cardboard tubes from inside toilet rolls, you'd have the best nightvision goggles ever!
