| | | Hwy 401 Service Centers < on 12/20/2008 7:30 AM >
| | | The westbound 401 service centre near West Lorne has been completely demolished, and the eastbound service centre is in the process of being demolished. They are both closed off completely, but signage closer to Chatham advises the Tilbury one has limited services including washrooms but no fuel.

| | | That's a long stretch of highway with no service stops. I have found the U.S. highways to be much better in terms of having rest stops every 20 minutes or so.

| | | Yeah but those rest stops along the i90 and stuff are there so you don't have to get off the toll road to fill up with gas / get food / go to the bathroom. The 401's just like... a normal highway, with towns along it.
Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you. |

| | | This is true. Along most of the non-toll US highways that I have been on rest stops are as few and far between as they are along the 401.

| | | The 401 doesn't even have a sufficient number of on/off ramps on some stretches. They've had to create emergency accesses in those areas for emergency vehicles and emergency detours.

| | | Tilbury West has washrooms open and parking, Tilbury East they had to open the parking for trucks since there is nowhere to stop after crossing the border. I think the washrooms and vending are there. Haven't been in there in awhile. The Morrisburg East one hour from Montreal was closed in the summer, but now the parking for trucks is open(over 100 spots) and there is a construction trailer with washrooms and vending machines. Lancaster West(ON/PQ border) is similar to Tilbury west and also shut down. Trenton west (Wooler Hill) is closed for now too. They say all of them for re-developement. The company who owns them is HMS Host from like Delaware U.S. so who knows what will happen. Looks like they removed all the underground fuel tanks and boarded up the restaurants, and that's as far as the plan went.

| | | There are two on both EB/WB 401 at the Durham/Northumberland border. I think they each have a Wendy's, Mr. Sub and a Tim Horton's plus gas and a gift shop, bathrooms and transport truck services as well. The one on EB is an original building from whenever these plazas were originally built, looks 70s-ish. The WB one is modern and characterless. Sometimes the WB one has a gate open that allows traffic access to and from the 401 to Brownsville Rd, affording local access to the stores.

| | | Anybody know what is happening with the abandoned rest stop in mississauga, between winston churchill and mississauga rd. Used to always go there to get my Wendy's. Looks like it has 24Hr security tho, always see a car outside the gas station parked. And they still plow the snow on the off ramp so they can get in.

| | | There was another thread going on that one awhile ago... at that time security periodically checked it out, and the security car parked outside never seemed to move. Dunno as of late tho...

| | | I was at the service center in mississauga in october and it was reasonably accesible, and had been very heavily vandalized. Its amazing how much damage can be caused in such a brief period of time. I guess the fact that the 401 is so loud makes the punk kids extra brazen, as it looked like people had spent a lot of time working that place over. I mean there were friggin filing cabinets thrown through the top floor windows, countless broken tables, trees thrown into the stair wells - real amateur shit. I hope they've secured it a little better since, but Id say if your in the area its certainly worth a shot. pictures of it in october can be found here: http://www.uer.ca/...urrpage=1&pp#post0 I'd be interested to see how it looks today.

| | | I think they have a steady crew there, everyday I go by its a new car outside. Used to be just a old crown vic security car. I wonder if I asked the security guys for a tour they would say yes.
