UE-Related Short Movies

Hello everyone,

I've made some short movies that involve UE in Toronto.

*

The first - and most UE-related - is called Exploring Spaces: A Documentary Moment
http://www.grpatten.com/DocMom.html

space explored: abandoned Inglis Factory in Liberty Village, Toronto
http://en.wikipedi...ki/Liberty_Village

Two versions of the project are available for viewing at the above link - a long cut, and a short cut. The movie isn't just about UE, but rather using it as a jumping off point to explore some other ideas relating to documentary authenticity and the like.

Technical info: both DVCPro 50 camera and Canon XL1

*

The second is called The Degrees of Difference
http://www.grpatten.com/Degrees.html

spaces explored: abandoned Symes Transfer Station, Don Valley Brickworks, Inglis Plant in Toronto

Technical information viewable here: http://www.imdb.co...t1291633/technical

---

The spaces aren't necessarily that new/fascinating to people especially familiar with the Toronto scene, but the spaces are utilized as an inspiration and a context for conveying certain ideas... bear that in mind. You'll just need Quicktime installed to view the movies.

When your film first started I assumed you were going to look for patterns /commonality such as building materials/architects-firms/time periods whatnot. Counting tiles, doors, stairs and examining colors aren't the types of patterns you'd generally think of examining to find meaning. Had you examining something such as the companies who perhaps made the tiles, or the windows, or even the paint I could have seen a pattern emerge that had meaning. It just seamed like a play with numbers, for which you could have used anything. I don't know why you put the film together this way..and you didn't really elaborate either which is why I said it was very OCD. Your counting/sorting/organizing things for the sake of organizing them and not examining them on a deeper level.

I also found myself thinking of the movie Pi after.

in the first film, "Exploring Spaces", my pessimistic mind kept thinking the letters would spell "I HAVE CALLED THE POLICE" or something like that.

might be just me, but i got the impression that you guys damaged the place a bit in your search of the hidden characters, not that the place is in real good shape to begin with. i dont think that this was really your intention. actually im kind of lost as to the actual focus of the first film.

thanks for the comments. Certainly, I do feel that each project conveys a meaning beyond the superficial level. Now I could go about explaining the individual focus/meaning that I believe each project conveys, but that's a little too blunt for my tastes. As for the damage concern: yes, some individuals objects within the place were damaged in the hunt, but note they were damaged and usually non-functional to begin with. This was not our intent, but perhaps a necessary byproduct.

So your basically justifying "causing damage" as a "necessary" byproduct for making a "film"? Just because it was already damaged and/or non functional does not give you any right to destroy/damage an item at all/any more.. Regardless if your making a film, or exploring. Sounds to me like your just attempting to make an excuse for wanting to cause destruction.

The only time I want to hear of an explorer causing damage to a location is when someone else's life is directly at risk. (example, accidentally locked behind a door that closes, etc)

what im trying to get at here is that with a short, sometimes you have to be pretty blunt about what your focus/theme/message is since your resources are limited. as a viewer, i didnt really feel like i took anything away from the short, and i felt i was supposed to -- essentially making it a "UE action flick" of sorts.

also please understand that im trying to just provide some constructive crit here, i do hope you find it marginally helpful. my only possible qualification is being a former member of a film circuit.

Thanks, Rickie. Very glad the projects have motivated you, and I'm also happy that you noticed the subtle elements of humor in them too. Post your movies once you've completed them.
