Behind closed doors: Union Station

I came back from a behind the scenes tour of
Union Station by the Toronto Railway Historical Association. For a modest $10 you get to go to the basement, and third floor hallways/ corridors. The security guards mentioned that a recent article in the newspaper showed how easy it could be to gain access to such off limits areas; and thus prohibited photos of certain areas. The glass corridor and props from a NYPD cop movie were the most interesting I was able to capture.

I didn't realize they've been giving tours. I guess that'd explain the recent influx of glass corridor pics that have been showing up on Flickr lately.

And it kind of sucks to see that a certain article about urban exploration that appeared in the National Post is preventing people from taking pics.

Actually, that area is off-limits, unless you are on a tour (you can call ahead and arrange these very easily - and if you coax them, they will show you the steam-tunnels); I have a certain knee-jerk reaction to photos of this place because of..err...an incident several years back : )

Someone owes you $10, bud-

(Hey, I thought I got all the as*hole guards fired...lol)

They also don't allow photos in the GO transit sections of the tour, including under the train shed and in the GO concourse. Last time I went, they wouldn't let you use a tripod either which sucks (some kind of liability reason).

But we saw the abandoned offices upstairs, some basement areas by the Hertz rental car place, the baggage cart area, toured the obvious places like the train shed, Great Hall, VIA concourse, and of course went on that ledge visible at the north wall in the Great Hall.

It was also a special trip where we got a tour of the nearby John St. roundhouse, but chances are that won't be included until renovations are complete.

Keep it fuzzy.

Interesting to see a bit of what else there is beyond the main areas. Some day I might just check out one of those tours. Thanks for the glimpse.

That's a terrible idea. You go down there with 3, maybe 4 people, tops.

Love that pic of the subway tunnel. I've always wanted to explore subway tunnels.
