Tunnel Hacking/Draining Tips

This is a BASIC tutorial. This is for the grungy little teenagers who get bored and want to go draining. I'm not going into too much detail about it because all drains are different. It would be much appreciated if you would all stop criticizing this post. If you feel like you could contribute and add some helpful information, please do so.

-Find a drain or service tunnel etc. that you can easily walk in. (not to small, steep, little or no water) Many drain entrances have bars over the outpouring. you should bring bolt cutters (if necessary) or a ratchet to remove bolts holding the gate in place.

-If you can, test the air. you can get home air testing kits online, or sometimes at home improvement stores.

-Don't walk as far as you can into the tunnel to the point where you are out of energy. You have to walk back as well. Unless of course you find the other end of the drain/tunnel. If the water becomes too high to walk in comfortably, plant a leg on the side of the tunnel that is dry, than swing your other leg on the dry area of the drain if possible. Repeat until you get to an area where you can walk normally.

-Scope out your location prior to exploring (make sure its easily accessible, you wouldnt want to get all your friends together for an inaccessible tunnel.)

-Dress for the occasion. Bring combat boots, fishing boots, hiking boots, etc. wear long pants, a jacket and maybe gloves.

-Bring the right gear. Two powerful flashlights, Boots, Crowbar, Camera with a bounce flash, I've used an infrared filter before photographing friends in drains. chalk (to make marks so you dont get lost) water bottles, first aid kit.

-Always bring a friend or friends. things could go wrong in the drains and there isn't any cell phone reception down there. Even if you are an experienced explorer you should still bring a friend.

-Make sure a third party knows where you are.

-When it rains, no drains.

-Be safe and good luck Tunnel hacking/Draining!!

Make sure you don't bring any water along, as you might have to squeeze through small spaces. Remember, you can always drink whatever comes out of the pipes - that wrench will come in more handy than any amount of Gatorade! Hit your head really hard on all the valves you pass to make sure the pipes won't suddenly start leaking steam. On a related note, rub right up next to all the old pipe insulation, it's safer (and cooler!) near insulation than away from it, right? If you see piles of fuzz-looking stuff around the pipes, be sure to spread it evenly so that you can see footprints by anyone else walking in the tunnel system. If you want to get out, just pop whatever lid or door you find, especially if it THUMPS at you - that's a clear sign from the Urbex Gods.

The lady in the photo you posted doesn't seem to be very well prepared for "drain hacking." She's not wearing combat boots, long pants, a jacket or even a backpack. I mean, where is she planning on storing her crowbar, medical kit and camera with bounce flash? Maybe that's why she looks so miserable.

Either way, while we appreciate the effort, you should probably let people who actually have experience draining write these types of tutorials.

Better yet, just send them here: http://www.urbex.o...oach/approach.html

I always wait for two consecutive thumps. That way I know the Urbex Gods really mean it.

I dont own a digital camera so I had to use pictures from the internet. I have UE experience, i just havent been on this site for very long. and I try to simplify things so they are easier to understand, it's not that im just too stupid to overcomplicate a tutorial. these are just basic tips.

tutorials have been done, check the link provided by micro

it's not that helpful advice isn't appreciated, just that much more experienced and reputable people have already done so.....and a thousand not so after them.

you wont be able to offer much in the way of draining or tunneling that isn't know already unless you design or build them yourself

That would be amazing, have a regional civil engineer give us the scoop (and hints) on the sick systems in a state or something...

Not sure wtf a bounce flash has to do with exploring/hacking tunnels but meh.

That aside, my fav version of approach.txt must be this one for the pimping ascii art!

Way cooler than a bounce flash is to carry enough light to attract cute astronomers.Achievement Unlocked

A bounce flash bounces light off all the tunnel walls illuminating a section of the tunnel for a better picture. A floodlamp would do as well.

Alot of the time if you search for your town and drains if you look through enough information, sometimes you can find maps of the drains. It's a tiresome process, but you might find a little information here, some more in another site, and so on and so forth. Thanks for the constructive criticism!

Oh you're talking about photography, I was talking about exploring. Sorry for the confusion. So easy to get those two mixed up, apologies.

You might wanna kick the tires on your sense of self-preservation there. That's a more dangerous problem than your broken sarcastometer, in my opinion.

Lacking the camera won't keep me out of a sweet drain, or machine room, or crawl space - there's always going back once you find cool stuff to boost your internet cred! But I do like photography, so I tend to take a camera - in a ziploc bag if that's what it'll take so as to not push me to hold back from good things.

[/quote] I do alot of photography while exploring but I don't own a digital camera, only a 35mm. and I don't really want to scan every picture to post it on the internet. I have a wall in my room that I have reserved for my UE photographs. And carrying all the camera gear can really get in the way of a UE adventure. I think its more about the experience than the Photography.

Note: No bounce flash used in that not-really-very-good photograph of stairs in Toronto's Westview Greenbelt drain that you've recycled from me. But then, I guess that's the point, no doubt bounce flash would have made that a much more effective photograph and thus less likely to be 'borrowed' by grungy little teenagers and publicly-funded British performance artists.

I thought it *was* about exploring. Hit that strobe trigger, and navigate by the fading inverted afterimage of the tunnel on your eyelids. Yeah!

I just googled "drain entrances" on google images and I thought it was a nice picture. I could remove it if you would like, but I thought I should add a visual aid to the post. Great photo though.
