| | | Uxbridge looks to save heritage site < on 6/5/2009 8:16 AM >
| | | My long lost exploring partner scarlett and I checked this place out four years ago. It was falling apart then. Now they want to save it... http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=22675 Uxbridge looks to save Altona Inn heritage site CELIA KLEMENZ / METROLAND
Uxbridge looks to save heritage site Township asks federal government for funding June 04, 2009 - 11:18 AM By Jeff Hayward UXBRIDGE -- Although it's fallen into disrepair, Township officials have big plans for a former Uxbridge inn. The Altona Inn, just within Uxbridge's southern boundary on Concession 2, could be an Oak Ridges Moraine learning centre, for example, according to those leading an effort to revive the building. "There are lots of options," said Councillor Pat Mikuse, Uxbridge's chairwoman of culture. The historic site, circa 1858, is within Transport Canada Green Space Preserve lands, and, like other buildings near it, has become derelict. Coun. Mikuse said she and Heritage Uxbridge, a committee of council, are in communication with upper government to sink money into the property to preserve or restore it. Because it's on federal airport property, the councillor and committee think it's vulnerable to demolition. Although the feds haven't said the site is doomed, "we're trying to get ahead," said Mike Bowman of Heritage Uxbridge. "I think (the inn) is an important part of Uxbridge history." Mr. Bowman said Transport Canada completed an assessment of the building and designated it a "class two" site. "If it was class one, it would be more protected," he said. Coun. Mikuse said Uxbridge is asking for immediate funding from the federal government to save the structure, pointing out trees pushing into the building foundation and the sagging roof. She said funding to fix it is justified, as it "will cost $50,000 to knock it down." Despite repeated attempts to reach Uxbridge's MP Bev Oda, she was not available for comment by press time. But her assistant, Mike Wilson, said on June 3 the MP's office has received one letter from Heritage Uxbridge on the matter. "We haven't seen much on the topic," he said. "It's still in the early stages." According to a history of the site compiled by Heritage Uxbridge, the site was used as an inn for 60 years and then as a grocery store and apartment building after 1921. "Although most of its internal walls and architectural features have been removed, some of its original staircase from 1858 still remains," noted the group. While its fate is being determined, a vision for the site is coming together. "It would be nice to see the trail system come through here," said Mr. Bowman. "I'd love to see an agricultural museum (on the property)."

| | | I was amazed just how many annexed homes and buildings there are in this area. There are signs everywhere indicating that Transport Canada owns the property. I found homes, businesses and schools that are sitting empty because of the airport proposal. I hope that someone steps up and saves the Altona Inn before it's too late. It's pretty strange driving down roads and finding home after home boarded up. It's like an entire city just got up and left.

| | | If the airport never happens, then having all those properties taken over by the Feds and families evicted, well, it'll be a shameful thing. A nightmare that began over 40 years ago...
