I have a 3M FR-M40 Surplus gas mask. it's a relatively comfortable mask, and (like many other mil-spec masks) the peripheral vision is quite good.

wow that thing is badass. how much did you pay for it?

Amazing prices and 99 cent shipping on everything.

I have purchased a few bags from there to carry gear. The one was $7.00 plus 99 cent shipping. Like I said, great prices.

The other one I have was $22 and it's huge, it can fit my older, smaller, but reinforced camera bag along with other supplies.

Beats the hell out of $100 camera bags from B&H.

Most of it is used, cheap, but does what it's supposed to. Just like the women I date.

So what about camouflage? Let's say you're hitting an area that's really overgrown and has a possibility of police patrols. Why not wear camo so if you have to hide, you're less visible? Realtree-style is pretty common now, so you might look like a redneck, but you probably wouldn't get noticed too much.

Don't try that during hunting season!

Camouflage is out of place to cops and security unless you are:
A: hunting
or
B: in the military
(im sure there are a couple other situations, but you get the point) yes, you may have a slightly better chance of not being seen, though its somewhat doubtful if there are active patrols... BUT if you are caught, youre going to have a much harder time passing yourself off as being a bumbling yokel who wandered in or a harmless, naive photographer if youre all done up like GI-Joe. K.I.S.S (keep it simple, stupid) usually works best.

You can play it off as fashion if you're just wearing BDU pants. I feel like it still helps a little. At least the ripstop material helps.

It's better to wear solid colors that blend in with your surroundings...grays,greens,brown. Faded black pants/shirts are nice too. But crisp new black clothing stands out way to much.

I have broken-in black BDU pants I wear either at night or if I'm going through wooded areas; they are nice to have because of the leg tie downs, keeps the nasties out.

I also wear my work pants a lot too because mcdonalds will just give me a new pair free if I wreck 'em.

I'm a bit of a gearhead myself. But are you really saying I shouldn't carry my man portable long range radar system, 3 LAW Anti tank rockets, 5 M1 Garand rifles (need spare parts!), 7 gallons of water and a rusty, broken knife?

OK, but really.. I do like to be selective about what I carry around too. if I know certain items will be useless for my adventures I don't bring it. But it is always good to carry at least a snack and some water, and some extra light. I Always think about what I need and try to pare it down from there. Gear is differnt for everyone.

Typically I will have a snack, 1 litre of water (If its' a longer trip I might bring an extra half litre and a couple snacks) hand sanitizer, gloves, utility folding knife, my 3D maglight, a 4AA flashlight, my day pack (that carries all the stuff) and my camera with extra batteries (usually 4AA's and 3 D's).. I don't carry a DSLR so the camera doesn't take up much space.
Sometimes.. situation dependant.. I throw in a small towel and spare socks (for Draining).. my air filter, more snacks, a glowstick, headlamp and some paracord.

Everyone is a bit different in that some peopel are absolute minimalists, and some people are gear heads by nature.. and exploration is one area that really lets gear heads go wild.. sometimes too wild.. I don't like to critisize too much though. But I think it is important to be selective for what you will be doing and at the same time be ready for any random drain/abandonment/active site you run into.

regarding camo.

you have to have the right for the environment, and you'll need cam paint and a helmet with a cam cover to make it reasonably effective.

but that wont exactly help you if you do get caught. avoid being decked out in camo.

The best camo outfit I have includes:

white shirt
Dilbert necktie
reflective vest
white hard hat
clipboard
bottle of Evian

In order to use your head, you have to go out of your mind.

You missed off the most important part! It all has to be brilliantly clean. A speck of dirt will arouse suspicion and so it should be steadfastly avoided.

Paid 'round 350 used, then another $50 per filter. Lotta cash, but well worth it.

Yes, I'd say you should avoid camo. The more you look like a paramilitary, the more shit you get into when you get caught. Go with dark colors (flat black or navy)for low visibility and a minimum amount of menace.

Half- BDU is okay though- i tend towards wearing a dark hoodie and BDU pants.

If you buy a used mask, do not use the filters that are in it, purchase and install new filters.

You never know the type of use it had before, and it could be filled with some pretty toxic crap.

Just a word of caution from somebody that made that mistake before.

The only vest would ever consider using is an HSGI WASATCH. Picked one up for airsoft, very comfy, lots of MOLLE loops for auxillary pouches, plus six very large integral pouches (designed for 2 AR15 mags each) across the front and a large pouch inside the front (designed for an armour plate) only issue is its a little big to wear under a light coat and its also a bit pricey to buy a new one. If getting it for UE only than it may be too much, all depends on how much you carry and where you decide to snoop around.

As a side note Ive donned many tac vests, including the '82 pattern CF harness during my brief career with the Canadian forces. Of all the harnesses ive worn over time the WASATCH and the 82 pattern have to be the best by far
