Firefighters contain industrial blaze in Oshawa

A recycling storage facility in an Oshawa industrial zone caught on fire Wednesday morning, sending a thick cloud of black smoke over the area. Firefighters have contained the blaze.
The large facility, which held old newspapers and other recyclable items, was destroyed in the blaze with its roof crumbling under the intense heat.
"It was unbelievable," said Frank Campbell, a nearby resident who heard a loud bang and then saw the sky turn black. "There was so much fire there...I've never seen a fire like that in my life."
The flames and smoke could be seen from as far as Port Perry, according to Dave Selby, spokesperson for Durham Regional Police.
Police were called in to help Durham region firefighters just before 9 a.m., he said. The fire was under control in less than an hour. However, smoke continued to pour from the site well after 10:30 a.m.
Nobody was hurt in the incident, Selby said.
The Fire Marshal's Office will investigate the cause of the fire.
The facility is adjacent to a former sugar refinery plant on Farewell Street near Oshawa's harbour. The plant, once known as West Cane Sugar, has been vacant for years.
Selby said he doesn't know if the thick smoke and flames damaged the plant but he confirmed the blaze did not spread to the building. Firefighters sprayed the plant with water to cool it down from the intense heat of the adjacent fire.
Employees of other businesses in the area were asked to evacuate because of the amount of smoke in the air.
