I'm not sure if military style marching applies in an enclosed space, with low traction on the ground from shit water, with a flashlight in one hand and a camera over your neck, with a group of friends who are exploring and not making good progress towards the terrorist nerve centre on a covert mission to blow it up.

But hey, I'm not much of a drainer.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

In any drain I have seen (and any I can imagine seeing), marching would only get in the way...it is often nearly impossible to follow a straight line due to obstacles, slippery sections, photography, etc. and making an effort to stay in file seems quite unnecessary

not marching proper with legs parallel to the ground and arms breast pocket high...just a semi steady pace that everyone can keep up with and not slip or fall behind, and some experienced people designated to watch over the nooblets.

It takes an influence from military marching, but adapted for the sake of your having recreation and that its in a drain. The main point was having two people with experience make sure the new people in the middle are with the group and and such. And that if you wanna stop for something, you let everyone know, so you do all get separated and no one panics thinking their "missing" friend is hurt or or something.

I think you're over thinking this just a bit, everyone walking in the same direction seems to work for me.

The biggest problem I have is that when I'm in the lead the drain acoustics often make the footsteps of the person behind me sound closer than they are, causing me to speed up, this used to really piss off my ex-girlfriend.

They aren't stepping off on their left, they're doing it wrong. Also, the marker looks like he is ready for nap time, which puts the rest of the file in extreme danger.

grit your teeth in the face of fear. self repression is the true sign of a coward, toss your inhibitions to the wind.
