| | Creepy Shack < on 11/18/2009 6:41 AM >
| | | On the way back from my folks place in Haliburton we saw this old shack so we thought we'd go check it out. I found out later on that the shack was used by some nomadic family of one husband with numerous wives. He apparently murdered a couple of them. I do have an article somehow that I must find and post the actual details, but for now here are some pics. Yes I'm a noob. The floor was rotting everywhere, and my right foot actually broke through the floor. I had to get pulled out by my bf, quite comical, yet a bit scary. It was also a big mess as if everything had been tossed around.

Welcome to UER! I think someone might be pulling your leg about the history of this place... descendants of the original owners live all around the local area, and in fact still own the property, farm the land and use the barn. I posted some pics from my visit there a month or so ago in the thread "E is for Elephant" http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=73172 You were brave to go inside... the floors really ARE sketchy in there, aren't they? (The hole in the floor on the second floor at the top of the stairs is from my big foot.) Nice pics!

| | | Well, the info was in a small community newspaper, and there's even a book out. I'm going to visit my folks this coming weekend and see if my mom still has it. I can't view that link, I'm not membery enough

| | | You're not thinking about Roch Therriault and the Ant Hill Kids commune near Burnt River, are you? There's a 1994 book and 2002 movie about them, both called "Savage Messiah." Book's available at Amazon & Alibris, movie at Amazon & IMDB or check your favorite torrent site. If the photos on this site about Therriault are accurate, I don't think it's the same property. This photo shows the commune house as a building with vertical siding, and a big staircase to reach the main door. Nice set of pics, though, sativa. I like how you hilighted the contours worn into the stair treads.

| | | OOOOOOOOO that's EXACTLY what I was thinking of, maybe my mom had it wrong, and yes it was at Burnt River. I found out by photographing one of the magazines that are still there from the 70's and the name they're addressed to. My mom asked around about that particular house, and that's the info she was told, and was given the 6 page "newspaper", OH WOW, yeah you're right it does look like a different place, from the pictures. Very interesting, maybe it was the same property but deeper into the woods behind it? HMMMMM I think I'm gonna have to go back yet again. Thanks for clearing that up for me, and thanks for the links, VERY interesting. [last edit 11/18/2009 6:34 PM by sativa - edited 1 times]

Sorry about that, Sativa. I have a smaller set in this entry in my blog http://www.caledonstudios.com/?p=1118 most of it will look pretty familiar. So sad to see the little lantern finally keeled over. The friend that first took me to this place is a local, and distantly related to the owners. Since this thread is public, I'll pm you with a more detailed history of this house and the owner's names (to respect their privacy). Now that you mention it though, the commune might be an interesting visit... hmmmm.

Yeah, you're right. Sometimes the line dividing bold from stupid can be a little hard to see... especially through a viewfinder.

When I first read that the first thing that came into my mind was Roch Therriault. It's funny because I just saw the movie Savage Messiah for the first time the other night. I had no idea any of that stuff happened until I watched it. Pretty sick and disturbing stuff. The movie is great though. Highly recommended. Although I could of sworn I read somewhere that Roch's house got demolished shortly after he got arrested. But I'm not 100% on that. If you do happen to go back, let us know if you find anything.

I thought I recognized that house and decided to read the storys and all I can say is "What a sick *$&cker" This whole story is sordid and mad crazy...my friend has lived up there her whole life and I would bet her mom would know a thing or two...Iam going to inquire....

This is so weird, my cousins were talking about this last time I saw them. They lived near there and went to school with one of the kids involved. Does anyone know if Roch's house still exists?
