Here are some pictures from today's exploration of a well known boiler. This time it is frozen into ice.

Haha.

So, me, ridemypony, Evidence and Hi-LITE were down there, and Tomms comes flying down the stars, across the floor then goes HOLY SHIT, when he realizes what the floor is : P

Surreal, eh?

I have a few shots of the place in my blogTO article this week:

Nice shots, man-

ps. the fridge was the best: a fat man's nightmare.

I let Banditt jump on the floor couple times before id step on it. Its like half a meter deep! It is also possible to see ice moving when you look at it near walls. I think it is not frozen all the way to the floor.

There is definitely something surreal about seeing a boiler room frozen. Snow on the valves, those half drowned clocks, as if someone put it there... these are the final means for the building to express itself, since most of it is beyond the point of restoration.

What killed me was the mechanical (brightly coloured) piping UNDER the ice, still visible.

Tomms' reaction was priceless though. He was doing his thing in one of the hangars, then he comes in -- at which point the other guys were all set up with their tripods and such taking shots (I only brought a point and shoot) -- he comes running down the stairs to tell us something, then does a double-take and freaks, because it's so awesome. Like, he walked right across the room before realizing it wasn't concrete ; P

that's weird, is it a recent abandonment? all the pipe labeling looks fairly modern. even the equipment does. leaky roof or a missing roof I guess?

I really did want a visit here for some time.. I absolutely love old aviation history. As a bonus, it turned out to be significantly more interesting that I would have imagined.

When I saw that clock frozen solid in the ice.. it was too perfect...

I am so glad that ice turned out to be solid!

Basement ice can be quite fickle... lol.

That type of pipe and equipment labelling has been used for many years. The type of flame relay in the volcano boiler (seen in the picture) leads me to believe the boiler is late 80's or earlier. There will actually be rating plates on the boilers with the year of commissioning stamped on it.

You can't be lost if you don't care where you are!

Great call on the flame relays as well as the boiler plates!

I ran a couple of volcano / cleaver brooks boilers back in the early 80's, but the circular bailey charts.. I would date them back to mid/late 70's. The electrical disconnects are varied in ages, so my guess would be early 80's overall.

I have seen boiler rooms flooded (not quite that bad)! but never frozen!!

Man this place is falling apart rather quickly, I used to have to be in this building quite a few times with the military a few years back now..

Amazing how much the broiler room has degraded...
