Has anyone seen this/ been in this storm drain? It is located down at the bluffs by the lake, just a little bit east of the Guild Inn (or what's left of it....*sigh*). Exact location: 43°45'8.70"N 79°10'43.33"W
It's in the area for me- so I thought I'd check it out, and it seems like it could link to a larger system in the area, but I dunno. At the time when the pictures below where taken, there was too much water flow to go in. The tunnel is about 4-5 feet in dia., and boy - does it smell on rainy days! I am under the impression that some overflow sewage may discharged into it...

In addition, there is a small cement bunker nearby, which is kinda cool because of the graffiti....

He gives exact coordinates; it appears to be on the north side of Lake Ontario

yea it should prolly be in the ontario forums...pretty sure this is in Scarborough.

and yea it looks interesting...definitely looks like some dark water coming outta there...if you say it smells fresh, its likely CSO...unfortunately if the outfall is only 4-5ft, chances of it getting any bigger are slim, but its definitely worth a look just in case...you never know. that bunker looks pretty cool too....I remember hearing about a larger one out that way not long ago

I'm from Scarborough, so if you wanna go give that drain a dive, let me know. The weather is definitely picking up around here. Good to see another drainer around the Scarborough bluffs!

As for the size of the tunnel getting any bigger... it very well might, especially if it's a CSO. Likely means the tunnel itself is an extra overflow from a larger system, probably used as extra emergency runoff for both the rainwater and sanitary systems. The Guildwood system is fairly old so you never know what you'll find. Old drains tend to be a lot more interesting looking on the inside, despite being smaller.

One thing's for sure though, if that outfall is level with Lake Ontario, there's going to be a pretty steep waterslide going up the bluffs. Sounds like fun to me.

I second that! both. I would love to tag along. I had recently came across a larger drain near where I live. I'm over by Meadowvale and Sheppard. I had explored it but we didn't go tooooo toooo far in. There was a split and the drain got smaller. I am hoping to go back some other time to venture further. Heres a shot of the outfall.

Ya it must be an overflow, especially cause it looks like raw sewage is coming out of there- straight into the lake. I don't think Scarborough is that ghetto.

interested by the bunker. but there a lot of storm drain like that by the bluffs they go all the way do to the beaches . would like to get in the water sew plant by there and bunker really interests me.and Scarborough is ghetto when compared to other parts of the gta with Canadian standards though we have it pretty good when you think about.

Hah, you'd be surprised. The issue of Scarberian CSOs dumping crap in Lake Ontario isn't a new one, but is ignored most of the time. Guildwood is one of the older systems, and I've never seen them rebuild any of it. The story as I heard it is, back in the day they built a series of waterfall drains doing down the bluffs, moving as the areas around the bluffs got built up over time. When the day came that the old drains were too small to take all the flow, they decided it would be too much work to excavate and modernize all the pipes buried in the bluffs and made new channels below street level at the top. These go west from that point I believe, letting out near the old Waterworks at the foot of Warden. They did, however, leave the old pipes in place for overflow purposes. If you've ever been down near the beach when it's raining, you can see them really start gushing... but not -nearly- enough to account for all the water coming down topside from practically everything north of Kingston until you start getting near the Taylor Massey.

That one at Meadowvale and Sheppard looks interesting too, and who doesn't love swing-up outfall grates? Can't believe I haven't seen it yet. It looks a lot like the RCP at Middlefield Rd & Richmond Park Bvld. They tend to be kinda plain on the inside, but you never know.

And I am definitely intrigued by that sealed-up looking side of the bunker box. That's gotta be a former drain, and judging by the size, probably from when the bluff waterfalls had to take the whole load.

That looks like Wimpey Morningside. You're not the only one to only go a little way in, which is too bad, because it's got a pretty unique indoor slide with churn blocks. Don't turn around until it's too short to stand upright, kids, you'll miss the good parts.

outfall
side pipe just a little bit inside
the good stuff halfway through

As for the Bluffs one, there's at least two of them down there, both of which are shorter than me, so I haven't been in them. I think the more remote one is a bit taller than 4 feet, but it's not taller than 5 if my memory serves me correctly. Further west I've seen one of the Bluffs drains that feeds the filtration ponds in Bluffer's Park - it's an instant death dropshaft (fed by a 5 foot high pipe), which I suspect would likely be the case with the ones in the original post as well.

Although there's only one way to find out, so get in there and bring back some photos.

yep.

No, he's not. That's west of this. I've been to the outfall from the original post, but not Ninj's Bluff. Kowalski's been to Ninj's Bluff, it's on his site.

Aha, O.K. now I know where place this is, those churn blocks ring a bell from a lil' bit of virtual scouting way back.

They are hard to miss in satellite photos. The one just northwest of it is called Hardcore Test, it's kind of boring but with a couple cool waterfall/plunge pool features.

Yeah definitely Wimpey Morningside. As far as going in, when I went we definitely got to that part with the churn blocks{Pretty cool if I might add}. And when we reached the smaller drains we didn't go any further.

Good that you went all the way through, it sounded originally like you'd turned around after the first junction (which others have done, missing the churn blocks completely). This is the best drain I've seen in Scarborough so far.

Hardcore Test is another drain nearby, if you look northwest a little bit on tree-free satellite imagery it outfalls into the same creek as Wimpey Morningside. Not really worth a return trip just for itself, but if you're in the area already it'll kill an hour or two.

yep.
