I still can't get over this estimated 10 million per station cost.

Yeah, that is retarded if true. I would've done it for a couple thousand bucks.

Incidentally, there are apparently a lot of subway drivers (I'm assuming more over here than there) who suffer from PTSD and have panic attacks while pulling into stations.

I've always said, just move the control room to another part of the train, not the exact front, and have a video feed. Then it'll just be TV violence.

Also, comon people! Its the way of the future!! Think of all the savings with the automated subways- can fire all the drivers!!!!

Never going to happen. The union wears the pants in the TTC marriage. They'll never let those well-paying jobs disappear (which is part of why the TTC is such a cash whore...all those high labour costs. $26-30 an hour is a pretty good rate for driving a train around).

Keep it fuzzy.

Its reason why the Scarborugh RT has drivers.

For those don't know, the Bombardier ICTS is supposed to be 100% automatic. The ATU that represents the TTC threw a fit citing safety issues for passengers so the TTC bent over and took the coolest feature of the ICTS and put drivers up front.

The first full implementation of the Bombardier (then UTDC, former Ontario crown corp) ICTS was until Expo 86 in Vancouver.

Do you even know what your talking about? From what I have been told by Transit constables, they have a jumper per week. Maybe they got hit with a liability suit, and that my friend is much more expensive. This just screams liability control, and what's worse they are going to be using some shit design AND overcharging grossly.

Am I the only one who finds irony in neither of you being listed as being from Toronto and commenting about the TTC? Do any of you even take the ttc?

I've heard they get a jumper per day almost..
You never hear about it unless its really bad too.

Plus now they want to add these suicide barriers, aswell as extend the sheppard line farther east to meet up with the RT in scarborough? Where's the money coming from?

The better question is why bother. They should focus on eglinton and actually get something out to the airport, like every other major city does from the downtown core.

This rumor has been put to rest with the release of the statistics.

And yet, funnily enough, it is this same decision that is keeping the ICTS trains running right now. ATO has been dead on the RT for the last two years, and they've given up trying to fix it. They have to run in cab-signal mode now... which requires the drivers.

As I was reading this thread,Old To Billy Joe came on on the TV. Oh the irony. My only point though was that those who are determined to commit suicide will do so no matter what. And that was already said.

Don't forget, there's sickos out there who will push people in the trains path. Dunno if that has happened on the TTC tho. I know it's happened elsewhere.

Just another angle.

Heh, I remember being on a tour of old transit control years ago, and he pointed out some shitty pentium desktop - "And this is the computer that runs the SRT!"

It has happened on the TTC. Maybe not as often but there were some people pushed onto the tracks.

As I recall, ICTS uses SCADA so it was probably just the terminal for it.

we have them on the Jubilee line here, for the same reason.

only some of the stations have them, like westminster. there's about 3 or 4 jumpers a month, and they all seem to happen in the span of a week or so. too bad TfL dosn't release statistics on this sort of thing.

the deep level tubes all have 'suicide pits' in the stations that were installed during the depression. dunno how effective they are, as there's loads of equipment hanging off the bottoms of the train cars, as well as that nasty third rail in the middle.

do you know how to waltz?

Yeah, saw those when I was in London a few summers ago. I don't even know if you could get into the suicide pit, with a train barreling down on you, without brushing up against that power rail in the middle.

Hmmm, that looks like a good idea. A costly one for sure, but there would be less door and barrier issues to deal with.

But implementing it would involve taking tracks through stations out of service for extended periods of time while the floor is deepened. I can't see them doing this.

Keep it fuzzy.

Seriously, when does the government and lawyers require everyone on the planet to be locked in their homes with the doors nailed shut and to be wrapped in bubble wrap?

This nanny state paranoia bullshit needs to end asap. gets old very quick.

Let people self terminate, who cares anymore. Let them jump and break out the fire hose, or here is a better idea. work with people and make the budgets larger for mental care facilities.

Society as a whole, bar none, creates the monster, pushes them over the edge repeatedly, and then further kicks them in their balls with labeling them as crazy, not normal, and brushing them off.

ask anyone with mental problems if they actually like the hell they live in everyday and they will probably tell you no. I speak from experience...

It's easier for society to feel something for someone with a gunshot or a broken leg then it is for people with mental illnesses and life problems

because we all know it's probably only actually maybe 20k in costs to build it, but labor, fat cat tax, political/dirty contractor agendas/etc are all tacked on. I've seen huge buildings in the past that got built for 1 million or less. Today? in the billions

I think it's moreso an issue of service disruptions rather than potentially saving lives.
