Bill's House Part 2: Ice Spiders

So I already covered the garages and barns in part 1. Today I will show you the inside of the house.

The main floor was extremely bare. It was in pretty rough shape in some spots, with paint peeling and insulation falling from the ceiling. However, there was absolutely no graffiti or vandalism done to the place. So far as I know I'm the first person to enter the house since its abandonment.

A few things of interest were the bathroom, which I liked the tiled style of, and a small cabinet built into the wall, which upon opening I was greeted with a horrible musty smell that must come about from being closed for so long (in the pictures its the one with the glass windows).

The basement proved to be more interesting, it seemed quite large. One section seemed to be a girls room when still in use, due to the spice girls picture I found. There were also some neat old gauges and electrical boxes.

By far the strangest thing I've seen in my UE experience so far was in the basement of this house. When I first saw these, I had no idea what they were. With a little closer inspection I realized they were dead spiders hanging from their web and covered in a fine layer of ice. They were simply stunning to look at, I have never seen something so abstract in nature. What makes things even more bizarre was that I was exploring this place in the middle of July (July 21st to be specific). There was also a small pile of ice on the floor.

If anyone else has encountered such a thing or has any information, please let me know.

Freaky Cave Spiders!

I found this one in a drain, it was definitely above freezing (i'd say 10C/50F) in the drains so something more than icification happens to these spiders.

what do you mean by 'something more than icification' exactly?

I'm not sure; the spiders definitely aren't iced over, they are either mouldy, or taking on some sort of mineral deposit. Maybe I should have touched one to try to find out...but at the time i thought i had an endangered species rather than a peculiar process happening to dead (ordinary) spiders

I was wondering if they were mouldy, but it just may be ice, look at how the thinner parts are more transparent. Then again, if the spiders are iced over, why isn't anything else? which brings us back to mould again.

So many unanswered questions. I'll try to make it back there again and touch one this time.

I have encountered these spiders in the basements of several abandoned houses in the winter. They are the real thin spiders that usually sit in the corner of the ceiling. I think the foam they cover themselves in is some sort of hibernation.

Never thought about that, makes sense.

None of this explains the ice in July however!

It is not rock salt! I stepped in it, it was definitely ice.

In the middle of July, where temperature below the frostline stays at around 10*C. Right.

I think it was cold enough down there though, it was in a basement. Whether or not anyone chooses to believe me or not is their choice, but I know what I saw.

Hate to double post, but the mystery is solved, the spiders are in fact covered in mould:
