| | | Whoops - got felt up by the PGH PD < on 4/22/2010 4:07 AM >
| | | So my GF and I decided to go to Lawrenceville in Pittsburgh for breakfast. There was about a 20 minute wait at the diner so what the hell, let's go for a ramble. We wander around, look at the really pretty buildings in the neighborhood, and decided to walk down the tracks for a bit.
Across the tracks from the Carnegie Mellon robotics lab, there is a huge old mill that looks quite abandoned. So we poke around the coal loading equipment for a while, climbing up some ladders and looking in holes in the building. Inside, we can see some pretty $$$$ welding equipment - okay, so maybe the building isn't abandoned. Anyways, we're not giving any trouble, just looking around, so I'm not too worried. We decide to call it quits and start walking back to the restaurant. About 300 yards from the place, in a residential area, a cop car turns the corner, stops, and the officers get out and order us to get our hands up. After they frisk us, they say that someone called in robbers and the area was suffering a rash of breakins. A few more cop cars show up - 4 in total, including an unmarked one. Damn, what did I just do? The cop in charge wanted to know what the hell we were doing down here. We told him that we just liked looking at old things, and wanted to take a few pictures. This was met with a few grunts and a request for our IDs. One of them ducked in the cruiser to run a background check, while the most senior one and asked us WTF we were doing in this part of town. I explained that my GF lives in a neighborhood across town, we were in getting breakfast, and wanted to look around. Being well dressed, not carrying any tools, and being found some distance *away* from the property without any stolen goods or s**t like that probably saved our asses. They asked us a few times to confirm that we hadn't entered the building, just looked around the outside. After the warrant check or whatever they were doing in the cruiser came back, they took our info and told us that we were trespassing on private property and not to do it again. We got the hell outta there! Moral of the story: "Carnegie Robotics" is a defense contractor. Don't be dumb and wander around in daylight near them, even on a Saturday. OTOH, major kudos to the Pittsburgh cops for treating us with respect and, once they figured out we weren't trying to steal the super-nice welding equipment, having the good sense / kindness / decency not to charge us with anything.

I'm glad ya'll weren't taken in for anything more serious. I'll second the "Don't mess with defense contractor locations." Unless you won't be found. But if you're found, you're at the mercy of the finder. [last edit 4/22/2010 4:25 AM by AnAppleSnail - edited 1 times]

| | | Yeah, and if you'd payed closer attention you would have seen the many cameras that no doubt watched you duck in what you thought was abandoned. Honest rookie mistake ...

| | | Part of that building is actually abandoned. Been there 3 times with no issue. Bad timing I suppose. Stuck my head around a corner to see the inside of the warehouse only to be suprised to see people. I'll have to dig around for that picture

| | | WOW!! That place is amazing.. Makes you think about what's going on in the world..
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. T. S. Eliot |
