| | Kincheloe AFB < on 5/13/2010 3:15 AM >
| | | After a bit of research and a few attempts to locate this it worked out. This is the ammunition depot for the Kincheloe AFB. During World War II, the Soo Locks were considered vital to the war efforts. An airport was planned in Kinross as early as June 1941 and construction began in 1943. The base was then designated the Kinross Auxiliary Air Field, and was to serve as a refueling stop for aircraft headed for Alaska as well as to defend the locks. However, no tactical units were assigned to the base during the war. After the war, the city of Sault Ste. Marie, along with Capital Airlines and Trans-Canada Air Lines, leased the property and used it for commercial air service from 1945 to 1952. With the increasing tensions of the Cold War and the outbreak of the Korean War, the 4685th Air Base Squadron was assigned to the reactivated airfield in October 1952. Kinross AFB expanded throughout the 1950s, and was renamed "Kincheloe AFB" in September 1959. The base was a component of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the Strategic Air Command, having its runway extended to 12,000 feet (3658 m) to accommodate fifteen B-52H bombers and ten KC-135A aerial refueling aircraft. In December 1965, the Department of Defense announced a decision to close Kincheloe by October 1971. Its units were either deactivated or relocated by 1968; however, in May 1971, the decision to close the base was reversed and it was again a component of SAC. This was only a six-year reprieve, as the base was inactivated on September 30, 1977 as part of an ongoing Reduction in Force in the USAF
Yes it is in Michigan but not far from the USA/Canada border. I also found out that this air field was the location for the filming of Die Hard 2 with Bruce Willis Bman

| | | Does that stencil in the second row say "do not drown yourself"? Is there anything left of any other structures like the control tower, fuel tanks, or administration buildings? Good find by the way.

| | | Great find! Yes, lots of old remains to poke around at there at Kinch. Most of the former barracks buildings had been converted over into about 5 different prisons. I dunno how many of them are still open now. But the efforts to convert the airfield into Chippewa County Int'l Airport had pretty much failed due to lack of use. It's been a long time since i was last there, but plenty of hangars were pretty much abandoned, as was the ATC tower. The old SAC Alert Crew Readiness Facility (aka Mole Hole) had been turned into the rental car office when I first poked around Kinch but the car rental places had moved to the main terminal bldg (old Base Ops). When I was back a year later, the Mole Hole had been bulldozed. /-/oolie

| | | Still poking around but with great caution. Some of the old base has been converted to a couple of prisons, one being HIGH security hence cameras everywhere and security officers with guns! The airfield has been converted to a civilian airport and is doing quite well. Canadians drive down to it to fly to US destinations, as it is faster and cheaper. I still want to go back down a do a little more investigating thou! Bman
