More successful draining

I did some storm draining today, and got some pictures. As with last time, this drain didn't really go anywhere, but it was a hell of a lot longer. I would estimate that it was at least 141 ft in total, although this is based upon the number of steps it was per section. It has two turns in it and due to the fact that the degrees were spray painted at each turn, I can estimate that from where I started, the drain was laid out as such: straight for 61 ft -> 33 degree turn to the right -> straight for 63 ft -> 43 degree turn to the left -> straight for 17 ft.

edit: I used my measurements and laid out the shape of the drain on Bing maps, and figured out that it's probably more like 160 ft.

so what happens after 141ft? does it open up again on the other side or terminate at a drop shaft or somethin? sounds like more of a culvert than anything. either way, nice job. maybe loose the flash and try a tripod + long exposure next time. keep draining

Thanks!

It's connected to a stream, which comes out both ends. On one, though, the stream's more of a swampy bit. On the subject of long exposure- I tried it once, but I had no tripod and as I also don't really know how to use LE, it didn't turn out well at all.

Here it is.

Good job, keep it up. I did a similar drain today, about 50 feet, 45 degree turn, then another 50 feet of RCP. No matter what it is, drainings always a blast.

Focus is the tricky part of long exposure. Use self-timer and put the camera on a friendly rock, then shine all the lights you can down the tunnel. That's a start.

Glad to see someone else who considers draining the best part of exploration; always handy to get a couple photos of the entrance/exit (from outside the tunnel) if you want to impress friends/strangersOnUER of course.

In short, draining results in crap photos but wonderful experiences (other than a few exceptions of truly stunning photography...but your average joe will get much nicer shots in an abandoned house than a drain).

Next time you might also try a little artistry with the camera, even if still just using the flash and a point-and-click - kneel down (one knee either side of the water if you can) and lower the camera to just centimetres above the water level, aim up a bit, and shoot. Should get you an interesting "mouse-eye view" of the tunnel

it would be cool if we had drain tunnels like that here in Florida. i'd have to bring a few people with me, though, and i would of course make them all dress like ninja turtles.
