| | | I was very surprised to see this today. The conversion to apartment housing is actually happening. The two dorm buildings are no longer joined together - the kitchen area between them has been demo'd. All the other buildings are still standing, but probably not for long. It doesn't look like the interiors have been touched yet, so there might be time for a last look inside.

| | | From Buffalo Rising: Two existing, three-story, rectangular, brick/clay-block towers will be substantially renovated creating 12 two-bedroom apartments in each building. The circa-1938 chapel will also be incorporated into the plan and will become a community center. Demolition of the remaining orphanage buildings was approved by the Buffalo Preservation Board. Six new one and two-story brick structures will be constructed. Two of the buildings will contain six, four-bedroom units; one building will have six, three-bedroom units; two buildings will have four, three-bedroom units; and one building will contain ten, three-bedroom residences. All of the units will be affordable for households at or below 50% of area median income. http://www.buffalo...ject-underway.html

| | | This is depressing. I was just talking about this place today and planning a trip there sometime this summer, guess it had better be sooner rather than later.

| | | Posted by Adv.Pack That sucks. I was just up there this year and missed out. Does anyone have any interior pictures?
|
There's probably thousands of them on the internet/flickr if you search for them. It was a popular place for a long time.

| | | I'm glad I got to see it when I did! Although I'm still a little sad that a return trip is now out of the question.

This was one of the very few locations that the local UER explorers were willing to share with me, back when they would still let me explore with them, so I do have some photos of it from last year http://www.uer.ca/...rrpage=2&pp#post22 [post 22]

| | | I'm glad that "we" are losing this location to renovation and reuse than to the wrecking ball. It is great that new life is being brought to the old buildings that are being saved.

| | | I was surprised hearing this, because nothing ever gets done in Buffalo, and this place sits in a very questionable neighborhood, the kind of place that doesn't usually attract investment dollars. This meant, if you read Nightbird's article, that public money had to be used, and that usually means the old buildings get whacked, not saved. In this case, good for them, nice to see... That being said, this building really isn't a huge loss, since its integrity was compromised long ago by its re-use. It appears to have been used most recently as a school for inner-city children, so any explorers looking to find clues relating to its past life as a late 19th-early 20th century orphanage were disappointed...

Interesting, considering that they didn't care about it before. Perhaps they do now because something is actually being done with the property.

I agree with the construction materials, that stuff would disappear real fast.
