| | | Damien Nightbane, I've heard many accounts of that particular hook breaking on its second or third use. Best not to trust it.
Has anyone tried Jester's hook design with shark hooks? I've heard those are sometimes rated at 400 lbs or more. I wonder if they'll work for UE. [last edit 9/18/2003 2:14 AM by RadEd - edited 1 times]

| | | The shark hook idea is decent, but they do have a sharp end which will damage property, so for me, that excludes their use...

| | | The shark hook idea should work, with some minor retouching. If you have access to a welding torch or something, just bend the tips around and weld them back to each other, still leaving a hooking angle, but eliminating the probability of puncturing some poor security guard who happens to be walking past the window you want to get in. This way, it only dents his skull and knocks him out a bit ^_^

| | | You could always just file the ends to an appropriately dull ball and go with that. Don't those hooks have barbs too? Those would also have to be filed down. -The Lost Flock

| | | Jester's got a great system, so why should you (Jester) change? However, I'd like to have something thats more reliable just for peace of mind if nothing else. I'll be cutting off the barbs and sharp points. There are some things you don't want stuck in yourself, and ifit got too securly hooked, how would I ever get it down?

| | | I have one I made in metal shop a long time ago. The thing is really sturdy. I just don't bring it because it's awfully impractical for most explorations and I'm worried about swinging it too low and having it hit me in the head.

| | | I actually found a site, a school with a really nice looking smoke-stack and some awesome catwalks and machinery on the roof that looks very doable, I only need a grappling hook. So I'm finally gonna make one, I'll be following Jester's plans, and I'll tell you guys how it goes. -The Lost Flock

You know, RadEd, i think that for the basic UE that that hook would be fine. I mean i dont climb up walls that much, but i'd buy that for a "just in case" type of thing. Plus its relativley cheap at $20, so if you dont feel safe with it after the first use or so, you can throw it out and buy a new one (dunno why you'd do that, but its always possible). Thats my view.

| | | I just think ts risky to use at all. I don't think it was designed to actually scale walls.

| | | I can't use something that might break after the second or 3rd use, especially if I plan to use it two or 3 times in one night. I think building it is the only real way to make a grapplinh hook that you can use. -The Lost Flock

what i meant was that a ue like me, who doesnt climb walls too often, maybe once in a blue moon, could use something like that. And if the hook was hook was to break on my second-third use, i would probably be on a 10 foot wall, which i have no problem falling from. But then again if i was to climbing several stories up a couple times in one night, then yes, i would make my own hook.

It even says climbers, campers and hunters have all fallen for the Grabber. | they admit it is a scam. Actually it looks like a good idea but no telling how well they pulled it off. I certainly wouldn't pay $113.95 without seeing it first.

| | | well, its got the dimensions of the grapple in the second site that RadEd linked too. also, in the first site, one of the lower pictures where its all folded up, they have it in a standard 1-quart military canteen pouch. so if anyone is familiar, that should give a good idea of rough dimensions.

| | | That's more like it! 8.5" x 4" WHEN FOLDED! Way too big! That thing'd be so loud on impact, even if a guard was asleep he'd hear it!
