I think it is more that you need 2 sides solid that are at right angles to each other

i don't think it can because both the m and n are not solid letters at the top and bottom. i think for it to work you need at least two of the letters to be solid at top and bottom.

Not sure how SMN could be done, but you don't need 2 letters that are solid at top and bottom.

For example, FML is possible in a particularly interesting way.

would there not be the problem of the s casting a shadow on either the top or bottom of the M or N when the light was on them? as in it would cast a shadow between the space in the letter. i don't know.

Sorry, what was that you were saying about forever alone?

That's exactly the problem

I think it might be possible to make it work, but the actual shapes wouldn't look like the letters. They would be twisted through 3 dimensions, leaving only the projections of the letters as shadows.

I tried to do it, and I got the S and the N ( could also be an M), but I don't think I can get the M in there:

If the "S" was a "Boxy"-style S, then it could probably be done...

I'm sorry I just had to weigh in and say that this is some of the wildest stuff I've run across in a while. This is just corner office man. I may have have to have one of for my collection. People will see instantly what a consortium of resources it represents. The logo speaks volumes. There's just such a tension and resolution if you will. Each letter had to become part of the sculpture by losing something to become part of the adjacent letter, which in turn loses part of its form. And you can set it different ways to suit your fancy.
Also, I think the logo looks like a building, perhaps a college or university library. You could even have a limited edition with architectural features to resemble a scale model of such a building, but maybe 'distressed', a little to emulate the look of an abandonment.Best how it is now in my ops.

Tread ye gently my brethren.

That is really cool -- but doing it as a 2-sided shape is quite simple (seen from front and right side). Doing it as a 3-sided shape (front, right, top) is much harder

That is really incredible - I've never seen that concept being implemented before. I love how you knew sites to go to to sketch it out and to actually get the model made
