I did a very large very old psych center alone one night.. I almost shit my pants a few times =p Was expecting a face to just appear in front of me screaming at any moment, place felt haunted as shit. Dungeons in the basement, electro shock machines... Scary as hell, but not too safe either, entire rooms had the floors rotted out, and it was 6 stories high.
Generally speaking, I don't do anything alone anymore

Same here, while the chances of getting caught in a large group is great, I only go with people I trust. If I run into some punk or crack head, generally being in numbers will help you, nothing worse then running into a group of gang members by yourself. Also, if something happens to you such as you break your leg falling through a floor, your partner can help you out.

Think of it as a weapon. A two pound brick slammed into the face or head hurts.

Ahhh, but being a cute girl with a camera lets you get away with so much, because you look so innocent that most people will never give you a second glance. And if they do, you can play dumb and bat your eyes. Yeeaaah feminism!

FYI, exploring alone can be very dangerous, at any experience level. One of the most experienced, intercontinental explorers (Siologen) recently had himself an accident while exploring on his own (the accident itself was unrelated to being alone vs. with someone), but he is now in the hospital for the next three months with a broken pelvis. Luckily the subway shaft that he got dropped 9 feet down (yes, all of nine feet) when a ladder rung let go out of the wall on him was within a few blocks of an active (yet closed) station, and he was able to crawl over to it and there he luckily found a cop who called an ambulance for him (at 4am no less)

If his luck hadn't been up for the accident location to be in such close proximity to someone who could help get him out of there, who knows what would have happened to him. What if this had happened on track that was no where near a station, or maybe deep in a sewer or sub basement or utility tunnel that he couldn't have gotten out of without help, and no one there to get help for him, and no cell phone signal?

Point is, it may be possible to explore alone, but it's not always the best situation. Luckily Siologen wasn't trapped where he was, but this recent example goes to show that even the absolute best explorers out there are just as susceptible to freak accidents that result in serious, disabling injury, and if anyone didn't have a friend nearby to go and get help, their likelihood of recovery and survival could drop significantly. Let this be a warning.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!

thanks for the warning. i do worry about things like that. like falling through floors, getting impelled, other humans, etc... i think if i seen a opossums i'd actually freak out more than a human. especially since i seen the video where someone was exploring and they recorded and little brown ball running towards them. ew. so i go for it! i usually enjoy it more going alone. i get more of a rush that way, i guess. i get a feeling of accomplishment when i'm done.

It's always more intense going alone, for the same reasons that everyone try's to tell you not to go alone ;)

Don't go were you don't feel safe, even with others!
I'll take street smarts over numbers any day.

Going alone forces you to become self reliant. You also appear less menacing, and are much less noticeable which gives you a decided edge if you employ it properly. Always bring water.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

pepper spray... bear mace.. (wasp spray was mentioned by damn that sounds dangerous / potentially less effective) one of those high pitched alarm things you can keep on your key chain, push a button or pull it off and ears start to bleed. Could make a nice combo, trigger the sound to stun them then aim for the eyes nose and mouth, or spray em and leave the sound device behind to further confuse them as you make your escape.

Always tell a friend where you are going and when you should be back.

....find a bad ass UrbEx friendly man type friend who can carry a skull cracker, er, big maglight or a blade. Power in numbers. Even more power when number 1 has an eye ear nose and throat irritant and number two has blunt force and cutting protective measures =p

pepper spray is good.. i should invest in some of that. one of my good friends gave me a rape whistle cause she doesnt understand why i do it. never carry it though. the imagery in my head reading the combo made me laugh.

it's usually spur of the moment when i go to places. i drive by so many places [in the country ghetto locations] now and i don't go in them cause i don't have anyone to go in with me.. i can only do it so many times til i finally turn in the driveway and take a look around. i've been trying to find someone around here but they all work, married, etc.

Yeah, I definitely UE alone, though more often I do some scouting alone (for access points or potential dangers) pre-expedition and then explore the location thoroughly with friends.

I think one benefit you get to UEing with others is that other people tend to help push you more (in totally positive ways) - I feel that I'm more inclined to do more daring things whether just to prove my mettle, have a better time, or go farther and discover more for the sake of myself and others. You hesitate less when you have other people with you who are also curious or supportive or more or less confident. And you can push each other past mental and physical blocks and learn from each other and build off each other.

But I think one really great benefit to UEing alone is that you only have to take care of yourself; you don't have others slowing you down, and you can get a lot of that solitary grandeur alone than with others. You're also more inclined, I think, to do things for your own sake.

I often go alone, mostly because I can't find anyone around me that would come with me. Sometimes I get another photographer to join me on my tours, but that's more the exception than the rule.

If I got alone, I usually tell other people where I'm going to, so in the worst case (that so far never happens) people at least know where I am.

If I had the option, going alone or with friends, I would always take some friends with me. You can either share a cool location, or joke about the boring one you spend hours getting there

I follow the "do as I say, not as I do" policy...

I go alone but I wouldn't recommend it. I carry knife, maglight, manhole cover key/crowbar, etc, PLUS I usually put dirt on my face to look homeless.

I've never been messed with...

Oh and caro____0, I dig your attitude. You'll do well here.

To fail in what you've yet to achieve is more the spirit of exploration than to make no attempt at all.
