Easy Build - Super Bright & Long Lasting LED flashlight

Hey, this easy to build light is awesome if you need to illuminate big areas and don't want to change/ buy expensive batteries all the time.

1) Go out and buy/find a 6v Lantern Light. (usually $5 - $10 At Canadian Tire). I found mine at a local Re-Store which was heavier plastic and waterproof for only $2 and in great shape.

2) Find/Buy an LED Brake light front a Transport Truck (Tractor Truck) trailer and remove the red lens from the outside. These tend to be a little hard to find i found mine in the trash at a transport truck repair center and it worked fine. even if a few LEDs are dead it will still be very bright. Check wrecking yards ect, The one i have is $60 new if u want to spend the money. Make sure it is a 12V one, some are 24V

3) Battery - what you decide to put in it is your choice. I used a 12v sealed lead acid battery from active surplus in Toronto cost $6 and i charge it every 3 months or so. They even have longer thinner 12v batteries for $2.

4) Remove the old reflector/bulb assembly in the Lantern so you only have the screw cap and the lens (I never used the lens, I'll explain why later). When i bought the lamp the LED circuit was smaller then the opening for the old bulb and reflector unit. I used a piece of black plastic and cut a circle the size of the old reflector. Then I cut a smaller circle in the center of the plastic the size of my LED circuit essentially making a ring. I epoxied the LED circuit into the black ring. (You can see it in the picture where the light is apart. The LED circuit is white and you can see the black ring around it lol.)

5) Wiring - My LED circuit came with wires compliments of the trailer it was removed from. Red and White in my case.

Cut one long white wire (I used 5 inches). Just enough so you can easily connect the LED circuit to the negative battery terminal.

Now make two smaller red wires i did each about 3 inches long.

Crimp connectors to the end of one of the red wires and the white wire. Remember these connectors must fit onto the plug to your battery (See picture).

Because my LED came with the wires from it i didn't have to install connectors or solder them to connect them to the LED itself.

Now connect the white wire from the negative battery terminal to the LED

Connect the red wire to the battery terminal.

Now make good use of the lantern's switch. If there are any wires coming from the switch remove them.

Now solder the other end of the red wire to one of the ends of the switch

Now solder one end of the second red wire to the opposite side of the switch (opposite side of where the first red wire was soldered previously)

Make sure the switch is off, and connect the Opposite end of the second red wire to the LED.

Fit the now wired LED into the plastic case along with the battery and screw on the lens end of the lamp and your done.

I left out the lens because, i had put a layer of epoxy over the entire LED circuit to protect and waterproof it

I included a simple wiring diagram to make it easier (The purple spots are where you either need to solder or make a connector. I use a small car battery charge to charge the lead acid battery (I think its called a trickle charger)

Great writeup and seems like an easy way to create a fairly powerful light.

Even if its a wee bit large.
