| | Abandoned Mine < on 1/30/2011 10:49 PM >
| | | Pretty new here, but thought some of you might be interested in this. Back on my parents farm there is an abandoned pyrite mine that's been untouched since 1876. Here is a picture of my father and I there last spring: Here is another photo taken on the opposite side of the hill. It is a bigger opening:
And here is a "fools gold" specimen that was found in the mine:
The interior walls are covered in these fools gold samples. The next time I go home I will try and get some good photos and post them. Might have to wait until the snow fully melts though. I'm not sure how far down the mineshaft goes, as it is usually full to the top with water. There is quite a bit of history with old mines in Ontario, and I am privileged to have one on our own property. Here is a link to some brief history on the mining in Leeds County. http://www.rootswe.../leeds_mining.html Thanks for the great site!

| | | Sweet. For any mine hunters out there, I have several scanned geological and soil maps of eastern Ontario in my collection. If anybody wants copies, shoot me a PM.

Absolutely! It's quite the hike, but we always use ATV's to get back there. We also built a cabin facing the mine for a nice chill spot.
If some people are interested in going back there, let me know and we will try and hook something up. I am down that way (Brockville area) every 2nd weekend starting in May. Even if I'm not there, my Dad loves to show off this little gem to anyone who is interested.
