"blue ghost tunnel" and old Welland canal

these pictures are a little bit old, only like 3 or 4 months. me and a friend went for a hike to the "blue ghost tunnel" and the surrounding area.

first we hiked up to what is now a holding pond. walking back we discovered we hit the steep wall of the canal, knowing we wouldn't make it back up, we tried to walk around when we found these. me and my friend figured out that they must have been what is left of an old lock door, the wood having rotted away leaving the steel frame behind.

while i do believe in ghosts, i don't think the tunnel is haunted. this picture is just us breathing out and pointing a blue led light at it. but can you see someone standing there with a beard and top hat?

just for the record, these are not pictures taken for artistic purposes, i just think they are neat.

that is "grey ghost" of the blue tunnel, he shows up to remind people that they need to wear their jackets in cold weather. he is never mentioned in ghost stories because it doesn't make for a scary story.

anyways nice lil find,
how far did you go into the tunnel?

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

Aaah, good old St. Catharines / Thorold... The old stomping ground. How I miss thee.

Nice shots, and yes... That's a partially buried Lock door in your first little set.

i went in as far as i could while not getting my feet wet. that picture of the light at the end is taken from near the edge of the wood planking, past the supports. i dont have a tripod and i am kind of shaky, so the pictures are all blury. i can see how people might think it is haunted. very disorientarting, not being able to see your hand in front of your face. even with a flashlight, all you can see is a circle about a foot wide. next time i go, i plan to bring a barn lantern or something with a flame. and i think you can see your breath all year round in there.just my theory on some of the ghost pictures.

excuse my ignorance, it has been over 10 years since I've been inside the tunnel, but can you not just walk right through it? There was no water there last time I went, has it flooded since then?

sounds like what you really need is a decent flashlight...

as far back as i can remember it has been, but from what i have been told by the person who refered me to UER, the water is not that deep, maybe a couple of feet, but the mud at the bottom is alot deeper and thicker. the huge planks that make up the floor end for some reason. i dont know if they were removed, or just rotted away, but there must be at the vert least, 40 feet that i coulden't get to. in the winter as i understand you can walk all the way through, but as jerm IX said, the leekey roof right under the canal frezes into a wall of ice sicles in the middle.
sounds like what you really need is a decent flashlight...

i guess it is a matter of personal opinion really. the way the tunnel is slightly curved, 60 or 70 feet inside, you cant even see what little light is coming in from the entrance. plus the floor planks are uneven, so the light has to be on the ground so you dont trip. but the supports are at about 5&1\2 feet of the ground, so smacking your head is possible. i just think a lantern would in theory work better, by lighting up a particular area. even if you can only see 3 feet in front of you, you should still be able to see the floor, wall, and roof where as a flash light will only light a small concentrate area, but farther ahead. i guess it is 6 to one, half dozen to the other. again only in theory. i plan to test it out in spring.

on a related note, anyone know what time of year you have to start worrying about ticks?, or are there repellants or sprays, or any tricks to keep them off of you? i hate those little things.

I still think flashlights are better at illuminating underground spaces...try doing this w/ a lantern :p

and I wouldnt start worrying about ticks until spring / summer time. Im not 100% sure, but I dont imagine they're anywhere near as active during the winter months. Wearing a hat always works quite well for keeping them out of your hair.

Jerm was this taken a couple days ago? I've wanted to get down there to photograph the ice but was unsure of the conditions...

I'm very clearly wrong about which tunnel is the Blue Ghost Tunnel. The tunnel that I recall was only 200-300 ft long at most. I'll have to check with the person who brought me there, it has been so long now

i'm ridiculously bad at approximating space and time. it's probably more like 200 feet in

well, from my rough knowledge of spotting track laying spots and where the track's former location is clearly visible on google earth and the curve of the tunnel, i think i found the the old track bed (being a major railfan).

(approx old track in yellow, approx tunnel in red)
and by my estimation, (because i cant clearly see the other end of the tunnel) it si between 700 and 1000 feet.

Mmmm the tunnel isn't quite so long... Chop off almost a quarter of your guestimate. I have GPS co-ords for the other side of the tunnel somewhere on my computer if I can find them I'll map the other side for you.
