| | Brougham, ON "Ghost Town" < on 2/26/2011 1:46 AM >
| | | My apologies if this is in the database already, based on my access level, I have not found it. On a blisteringly cold day, I took a drive through Brougham, ON. If it wasn't for the wind, there would be no noise at all. Brougham is a community within the northern part of the City of Pickering, in Durham Region of Ontario, Canada. The population is about 250. Brougham was founded in 1791. Some of its lands are affected by plans to build the proposed Pickering Airport. Transport Canada has slowly cast it's grey gloom onto this sweet town, however based on their mythical airport plans, there is no reason what so ever to acquire this land. Sadly the houses are not being maintained, so they slowly rot into ground and today....demolition reared it's ugly head. I have also attached an article on Brougham and the unwarranted acquisition of the land. Enjoy! http://www.landove...-her-neglected.pdf Also, here is a great book on the history of Durham (Brougham and surrounding areas) http://www.ourroot...ge.aspx?id=1042677 PS - none of these pictures are duplicates.....there are THAT many empty houses... 1.

| | | those are all awsome shots! i know the rule, take only pictures and leave only footprints, but what about those red and white signs? seems to me like there are enough of them, i think it would make a great conversational piece right above my fireplace. and 11, 13, 19, and 22 deserve to be moved, not destroyed. beautyful styling. | | | What's so sad about Brougham is that while Transport Canada systematically depopulates the town under the guise of a future airport, developers are trying to populate Seaton, of which Brougham is at the NE corner of. There was nothing wrong with Brougham, once a very vibrant hamlet. http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=23688

| | | And it never hurts to see an abandonment through a new set of eyes. Nice job. I cannot believe how much that place has become even more abandoned in a matter of a few years. And all under the guise of an airport they have been talking about since 1977! And I sure hope the house at the corner of Brock & 7 isn't boarded up, that would just be wrong! | | | Nice pics BB. Any neighbour/security troubles? And 13 is actually the office for the airport authority i believe...or at least was. That particular building was in rough shape up until a few years ago when they restored it.

| | | Posted by PartyPooper an airport they have been talking about since 1977! |
In fact, the feds expropriated the airport lands in 1972 - and despite overwhelming opposition the project was never simply cancelled outright. It's still holding the residents of Pickering, Markham and Ajax (directly in line with a potential runway flight path) hostage. No one wants the airport. It'd make more sense to promote the Toronto Island airport or one in Hamilton, rather than in Pickering. My theory that the 407 ends at Brock Road is that it was always secretly envisioned as a "road to the airport".

| | | Thanks everyone! I didn't get to put much vision into these photos as I would have liked. My battery wasn't charged on my camera, so I'd get one shot before it would turn off. Plus it was FREEZING and I was in 5" heels... There are some houses in between that are active, but they really didn't seem to care. One man scowled, but I simply walked over and told him I admire the town and these houses and he was ok. Started ranting about the 'Damn Guvment". I wanted to hug him....but I decided not to. Also, a gentlemen I mistook for an explorer was actually a guy who was looking for an active house to call for help - his car was broken down on Brock. I stayed with him until help came. so my exploration was cut short. Oh and I hit up the local cemetery to get shots of a headstone for Henry Hilsop. He built one of the houses I was in. Very cool cemetery! I love the house you posted Fedge! I may have to visit that myself.

The Toronto island airport is a small airport and Hamilton is more than twice the distance from Toronto as is Pickering. Not that I'd support destroying this community with so many heritage buildings.

| | | its similar to what happened to mirabel airport, they expropriated a huge amount of space, including 5-6 towns, they realized they didnt need the buffer zone since supersonic flight wasnt going to happen so they started leasing the land back to local farmers, and now finally the airport has closed altogether, 1 runway is in use the other is part of a race car driving school... airport of the future

| | | Ah I drive by here all the time on Hwy 7, I never knew how many more abandoned houses there were. It seems like they're building an extension onto the 407 that ends around there.

| | | c'mon beerbunny, we got some 'sploring to do. may be interesting: http://pada.ca/sea...ts/?txt_a=brougham I am wondering if anyone knows where the Thomas Matthews house is? My research has placed it at con 6, lot 17 and 18. (As which was granted in 1799) but I have a map dated 1877 which states otherwise. http://www.histori...unty+1877/Ontario/ It should be immediately to the NW of Brougham. I really want to UE this house, and I am trying to track the land grants. But the trail seems to have run cold. Aditional info: Peter Matthews was executed for assisting William Lyon MacKenzie in leading a rebelion in 1837. Another edit: "Thomas Stevenson came from Fermanagh, Ireland, in 1830 to the 6th Concession of Whitby. In 1866 he purchased the Matthews farm, Lot 18, Con. 6, which is still occupied by his son, Noble." [last edit 1/9/2012 8:08 PM by paulpa - edited 4 times]
