This is not true for Virginia (other states may be different). In VA, if you have your concealed handgun permit, and you're caught trespassing, the gun is perfectly legal. The only way a permitted concealed handgun could get you in trouble is if you're committing a crime WITH it (brandishing it, shooting things/people, etc...), or if you're drunk or have weed on you.

(I discussed this with a lawyer when I got my CHP.)

Well, granted, that applies to Florida at least, and we're a very pro-gun state. I don't know specifics of other states, but I bet similar laws apply elsewhere.

This has been gone over and over again. You know what I have a glock I take kayaking... I hate the damn thing it didn't cost me crap and I have had some absolutely bad situations on a kayak. International distress signal is 3 quick shots wait 3 quick shots, and a few times I have debated doing that in various self induced stupid moments.

Do you need a gun? No. Do you need a knife? No. Do you need a light? No. Do you need a camera? No.

None of the items above are required or sometimes needed to be a urban explorer. While this site has lots of photos and caresses the underside of most good photographers some of us go for the thrill, the interest, and the joy. What you take with you is personal to your needs. I don't need smoke detectors in my house because I check for fire hazards a lot, but they make me sleep more soundly. If anything makes you happier exploring take it and carry on, and don't belittle others because you feel morally superior, smarter, or more caffe-frapa-choka-chino sheik because you explore with a 800-1000 dollar camera.

Also I'd much rather loose a 400-600 dollar gun then a 1000 dollar optical art creating device, so gun costs aside I find not taking something on cost or snickering about it moot.

There's a pretty simple litmus test here... If you think you NEED a WEAPON wherever you're exploring, you probably shouldn't be going there and I'd seriously question whether you're a danger to yourself and those around you. People who think they may have to use weapons are far more likely to create the circumstances where such use occurs.

That said, sure it's not a bad idea to bring some non-lethal utility or self defense items along because anywhere that is abandoned is going to be less safe than a public place. A knife is a utility item, and pepper spray is both reasonable and sensible.

If you're toting a gun or a sword or a bazooka, you probably don't know how to be safe in abandonments in general. (though im a minor hypocrite in this regard, because ill pack my .45, which i can legally carry, if im exploring really remote or rural areas... just as i do on any camping or long hiking trip)

My flashlight serves as a baton if needed, and it was on at least one occasion (A vagrant attacked me). That's just me though. To each his own, I suppose.

I disagree people with weapons generally are a hell of a lot more polite, relatively more safe and use sound judgment if they are legal. I have seen some idiots, and new owners that get stupid kinda like teens with cars. However if you are going into a place that is dangerous, or you feel you may have threat then be prepared.

It would be like not going into a building because asbestos might be there. Well come prepared or walk in and get cancer, danger shouldn't stop you to much should, and that comes down to choice.

I used to think that carrying my glock was cool.
...
I would hate to be disarmed and killed with my own pistol.

1) Never do anything because it's "cool".
2) If you get disarmed and shot it's because you didn't shoot the mofo, and if you're not gonna shoot him it's a good thing you decided not to carry.

As stated a couple times in this thread, and every other fucking "weapon" thread, the legalities of carrying a firearm while trespassing vary from state to state. Mine stays in my car unless I am going somewhere very remote/rural and by myself. As someone mentioned, 3 shots is distress to any hunter or anyone else with outdoorsmen knowledge. That can come in extremely handy.

I find it funny when people here automatically call others that carry "idiots"... just close minded ignorance there if you ask me. You don't know where they carry, or why, so give it a rest and save yourself from looking like a complete jackass.

My M&P stays in the car 99% of the time, but as is with condoms, I'd rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

I wouldn't want 80% of you owning firearms, anyways.

what i usually do is i will carry a multi-tool. not usually for defense but i could use it if needed. also i have a pretty hefty flashlight i can use. i personally will never take a gun with me because that is really really incriminating. i wouldn't recommend it for that reason, and because you can just use something you find like a pipe, nut a defense situation unlikely, but it's good to be prepared.

..I carry a pistol 99% of the time, but in New Mexico it doesn't affect a trespassing charge. Also, everything I do is rural. Personal call there, but you most certainly better know the law in your state.

I carry exclusively in rural areas.
With industrial buildings I'm not worried about rabid coyotes, big cats, or bears. All of which are fairly easy to run into where I live.
We've had several rabid 'yotes turn up recently and someone was even attacked by a rabid fox in their own yard.

Police are also more likely to shoot you if they see that you have a gun. I personally carry a taser which cost less than 10 bucks on ebay, but it can easily be used for defense against possible pedos that think I'm 12 years old and want to rape my butt...
Plus where I live you don't need any permits to carry a taser.

I can agree with it. When i take mine out somewhere i dont wave it around carelessly to where somebody can get hurt. Also I keep it locked and ammo separate at all times if im not using it.

This is the reason I didn't buy the carbon fiber version. I need the extra weight to beat people with.
Not really, they're just too damn expensive.

I dont want to
a) accidentally murder someone and spend life in prison
b) get shot by some addict who sees me as a trespasser and manages to get my gun

So, definately not. But it is a good thing to have some self defense skills and quick feet.

Luckily firearms are not an issue in most of Europe BTW, I carry a Leatherman with me and sometimes pepper spray against dogs (usually I tend to forget it at home).

I used to think that carrying my glock was cool. but the older I got I realized that it was stupid. One Glocks are not cheap. And two I would hate to be disarmed and killed with my own pistol so it's not worth even carrying any more when doing missions. Any feedback?

Glocks are about the cheapest semi-auto handgun you can buy. This simple mistake tells me you don't know much, if anything, about owning a firearm, and I'd be frightened to know someone that immature had a weapon with them while urbex'ing.

Then again, I'm 6'1" and 235, so I'm not typically afraid of being gang raped while exploring. I occasionally have a knife, that's about it.

A gun? C'mon kid. You're playing too much Call of Duty.

What planet are you from? I payed more for my Glock 22 C than I payed for any of my other pieces. Even my 4046 with the glow sights. My Llama Max 1 was less than half of what I payed for the Glock and I got the Llama new in the box with 2 aftermarket 8 round colt mags. Shit. My EAA wittness was only $300.

I could go up island to ace hardware today and pick up a Kel Tec P11 for about $200 out the door. (Not that I would ever buy a piece of shit like a Kel Tec)

That is not at all true. Glocks are very well made guns and certainly are not cheap. I guess someone might assume its plastic and composite furniture might mean its not the same quality as something with all metal furniture, but that is not the case. Glock's selection of materials is an intentional design choice and fits perfectly with the design philosophy of the weapon, which is oriented around its role.
