|  | | | Got off work early the other day and took a ride to find some entry ways for my next explore. It is a abandon navel yard with 2 old magazines, a few earth mound ammo magazines, and other buildings on a Island. My safest entry to the Island is a 1 mile walk on train tracks over a trestle, The tracks are still in use for freight (see pic below).
There is rumor of wild dogs on the island that I cannot confirm but I am hoping there are none. If there are dags I don't believe there wild as I doubt they would be able to sustain them selfs. I do have A CCW but I never take it with me as I live in NY and the laws here are gray at best with trespassing and carrying. Have any of you had experience with this type of thing or have you ever been attacked by a dog while exploring?

Now, I'm new, but I'm going off of what seems logical to me: if you suspect dogs, have a melee weapon in your backpack that wouldn't raise too much suspicion if out.

But on the serious side, I wouldn't think wild dogs should be a problem. If they are there, they will act much like coyotes and wolves and not really want anything to do with you, and stay pretty clear of a human. Bring a metal rod and pepper spray in case, but I wouldn't be too worried. And if you know the train schedule, try to cross when they won't be around. My brother is a conductor for a freight line and they REALLY don't like people on their bridges and he has called in for cops or their private security (usually off duty cops that will also arrest you) when they see people screwing around on the tracks, and especially bridges. Ever since there was a train here in Arizona that was derailed when someone tampered with tracks on a bridge over a desert wash, all the freight companies take that stuff really seriously. It (train tracks)actually falls under Homeland Security jurisdiction. He told me he has only seen one case where they picked it up though and didn't leave it to the local agency, but that was because the kid had a spike in his pocket, so they investigated the tampering aspect of it.
I would still totally go for it though. Just don't go when the trains are coming through the area.

Yes this will be an a problem, unfortunately CSX will not give out any time table for freight trains. So I plan no waiting for one to pass by then crossing I like watching trains any way.

| | | | Also, carry a nice hefty walking stick. I've run into wild dog before in French Polynesia. They'll check you out, but probably won't mess with you, especially if you are confident. And having a big ass stick does tend to make one more confident  Even better, a stick is a weapon that even a wild dog will recognise, with tha added bonus of just being a walking stick if you do run into LEO types.

If you're worried, just go there and find a nice hefty stick or branch to carry around - on occasions when I felt threatened by domesticated dogs, I just hacked a branch off a nearby tree and whittled off a few twigs from it, so it'd be comfortable to hold. Just do the same thing. You'll be fine if you've got a stick.
