The irony isn't that both explorers and scrappers are engaged in illegal activity, it's that the group of people who claim to care the most about places love nothing more than to see them fall into the hands of neglect and eventual decay. The only reason people care about scrapping is because it gets in the way of their romanticized version of how a building should evolve once its owners leave.

It's true that scrappers can destroy a building, but so can water infiltration. No one's going to complain about the former though because everyone loves the urban exploration aesthetic of peeling paint and broken down rusted shit. Last time I checked, that's what this site was all about. The more decay the better, right?

So basically, if you call the cops on scrappers, chances are you're only doing it out of petty self interest. I'm guessing because it ruined your photo-ops? Or maybe you're a little bumhurt because someone else intruded on your little secret? Whatever the case, if scrapping is really that much of an issue then either aim for places that scrappers don't think to go or get there before they do. Neither are particularly hard to do.

Finally, never expect a place remain the same way after you've stumbled across it. They all get scrapped, trashed, tagged, shat on, set on fire, demolished or turned into condos eventually. Take your 500,000+ photos of chairs and trash while you still have the chance. Unless you're prepared to help preserve a building in any meaningful way, then you should treat every visit as though it could be your last.

Isnt protecting the place from scrappers and vandals a form of preservation??

I see what you're saying, and mostly agree with your rational, but I still think that scrapping is wrong and would report someone doing it. Most times it goes well beyond simple theft. Scrappers destroy indiscriminantly - they're usually high out of their fucking minds and have no respect for life or property. I dont even see them as thieves - they're much lower than that.

A thief walks into a store and fills their pockets with stuff, trying to stay low key and avoid detection....a scrapper walks into a store and starts smashing everything in sight, then fills his pockets and walks out. They're, by and large, crude, unrefined lowlives who have no moral or ethical boundaries. Of course we're breaking the law too, but we're not hurting anything or anyone in the process. Most of us would never think of kicking in a door, breaking a window and ripping down a ceiling to get at a few bucks worth of copper.

You're absolutely right that its a very fine line we walk. We seek decay, yet turn our noses at those who create it. Then again, theres a big difference between an empty building thats been scrapped and something pristine thats been left to "decay". As I know you're aware, the more places you explore, the more refined your tastes become. There are plenty of locations in and around the GTA that I wouldnt even bother to check out because they're empty shells that have been picked clean. Not all emptiness is beautiful.

anyways, its 5:15 and I should have left to go home 15 minutes ago....enough rambling, its friday and I'm gettin the fuck out

there is nothing wrong with recycling the old. it is better than leaving the house to rot. Plus, the scrappers could be contracted by the owners.

Yeahhh.. I gotta say. considering it the last time you'll see the place is how it has to be. but yeah honestly in most cases scrapers have just as much right to be at a location as we do. sure it pisses me off to see amazing locations ripped up, or a truck loaded with scrap pulling out of my favorite buildings, but its going to happen, and the people doing it dont even see the problem. the way they see it is theres a building rotting away that nobody wants. might as well loot what they can...

all that said. I want to bash some skulls every time something amazing is fucked up..

There are different types of scrappers as well. I look less favourably on the one's with professional cutting tools, who drive a brand new Dodge Ram V10 than I do on the addicts who strip the plastic off wires. I have encountered numerous scrappers in Detroit who seem to be trying to eke out an existence from salvage and I don't fault them at all. Needless to say, a scrapper in suburban/rural Ontario is likely to be much less destitute than someone living in an economically depressed area in the U.S.

Absolutely. The one encounter I had at a school in Detroit was fine. The building was to be demolished so they were salvaging what they could before it was to be torn to shit. They were more scared of us when we went in there, and they definitely weren't the sophisticated scrapping types either.

I don't fault them at all. People have to eat.

At the end of the day, we explore places knowing what the risks are. If we're there with expensive equipment and we get robbed, that is on us. I would be pretty pissed off if this happened, but I'd probably understand why they did it.

To me, it is the history of each location that is so interesting. Scrappers and taggers are as much a part of the physical history as the natural decay and weather damage. What's interesting is to see and watch what happens to a location that has been abandoned by owners and forgotten by capitalism. You can't pick and choose what elements of that physical history may exist. A downturn in the economy and an upturn in heavy drug addictions are a part of the story at this time in many locations.

My point was that it's preservation simply for the sake of preserving the continuation of urban exploration. It's on par with not talking about places on forums to prevent "n00bs" from visiting them and having something getting sealed up. I know explorers do far less direct harm to places than scrappers do, but we don't exactly do as much good as we think either.

Anyway, sorry for shoehorning this point into the thread. It wasn't really in response to anything anyone in particular has said so far, but it's just what springs to mind whenever people start whinging about scrappers.

If we can still salvage some of the design of the architect, then it is worth while, there are several alternatives to demolition that involve de-constructing the house.

definitely a fair point. A lot of times I wish there was more we could do. But who's got the time and the resources to save these places? not me :\

This is so full of irony. You're there without permission doing stuff you should be doing and they're doing the exact same thing.

I've only run into scrappers once and it was a pleasurable friendly experience.

This is exactly why I wouldn't call the cops. So many urban explorers believe that they're on some kind of moral high ground because they're "taking only photos" but at the end of the day, a trespasser is a trespasser and I sure as hell don't want the cops called on me either.

I don't at all condone what they're doing but I think calling the cops ain't right.

Anyone else remember the Magic School Bus episode where they shrink down and explore the decaying log? I always think about that process of decay that involves factors and contributors all along the timeline of decay, and all culminate in the lifecycle of the abandonment. As an explorer I discourage those that are with me from actively damaging locations, or removing items, but I understand that if we could enforce a strict Urbexers Only! policy at locations, they simply wouldn't be as cool. That being said, I've run into dip shits who want to trash the place, and morons in 10 year old abandoned nursing homes still looking for meds.

Man convicted of stealing $50,000 worth of copper wire receives no jail time and is ordered to pay back only $5,000 in restitution, proving once again that crime does indeed pay

February 11, 2012
Newbury man sentenced in marina crimes

By Angeljean Chiaramida Staff writer

NEWBURYPORT — A Newbury man has been convicted for his part in last year's wave of thefts that resulted in almost $100,000 in copper wiring being stolen from the docks at city marinas.

Timothy R. Noonan, 35, of 248 High Road, Newbury, was found guilty in Newburyport District Court on one count of larceny of merchandise worth more than $250 in a theft traced back to Jan. 26, 2011, with a worth estimated at between $50,000 to $60,000. Judge Peter Doyle sentenced Noonan to one year's probation. He was also sentenced to a year in jail, though that was suspended — meaning, he will not be jailed initially, but if he violates the terms of his probation, he could be jailed.

Noonan's probation is conditioned upon repaying Newburyport Harbor Marina $5,000 in restitution, as well as remaining drug and alcohol free and completing the level 3 program with the Office of Community Corrections and staying away from the marina.

On a second count of larceny of merchandise worth more than $250 for a theft traced back to Jan. 10, 2011, Noonan was again found guilty but sentenced to pretrial probation with the case continued generally for one year.

According to court documents, Newburyport police officers picked up Noonan's trail on Jan. 26, after witnesses reported suspicious activity on the docks of Newburyport Harbor Marina. According to court documents, one witness saw two men in their 20s or early 30s loading wire into the back of a red Ford Mustang.

When the two suspects noticed the witness, they sped away from the scene; however, the license plate number was seen and given to police.

Newburyport Inspector Brian Brunault found the Mustang in the parking lot of Immaculate Conception Church, and through its registration, traced it to Noonan, who denied involvement at the time.

Noonan was eventually arrested after police used cellphone and text messages to crack the string of thefts.

Newburyport police were able to link the names of the participants with reports from witnesses that placed the suspects at the marinas or at scrap yards selling the copper wiring.

Noonan was arrested in early April, along with two other men and a woman, following the arrests of three other men in February in connection with the wire thefts.

According to police, some of the suspects used saws and other tools to hack through the thick cable containing copper at the marinas. In each case, the cable, which weighed several hundred pounds and was used to run electricity to boats docked at the marinas, took hours to strip from the docks where they were attached, police said.

In the process of the crime spree, the suspects caused more than $200,000 worth of damage to the marinas, according to police.
