David Whaley House

The other day it was very foggy and mild out. Soo I decided what better time to go exploring! Soo I checked out one of my favorite spots.

The David Whaley house.

David Whaley was born 1811. His father, Thomas Whaley, who originally bought the property. As per the 1878 map of the area, it states the lessee was of a Mrs, Whaley. Which I am going to assume either Thomas' wife or of David's wife. The house was believed to have been built in 1835. Now I know looking at the house in my photo, doesn't look like it was built back in 1835 at all.

1.

But this 1 1/2 storey, 3bay Georgian frame cottage was originally built in 1835. Somewhere in the mid 20th century this old home went through extensive repairs and renovations. The foundation remained the same. Strongly built. Most of the original windows and doorways were modified to the new Vernacular architectural style/design.

This photo is the original Heritage photograph of the David Whaley house
2.

David also had a brother, Alexander. Born 1825. Thomas had owned over 200 acres of land in the Cedar Grove area at Con 9, lot 2 and one lot west of that. So he divided the two brothers. David had the East half and Alexander had the West half of the property. On David's half there was a sawmill and a millpond, which today stands the Steeles Ave, bridge right at the Reesor rd{con 9} intersections. The sawmill was run by the Reesor family in the Cedar Grove community. Simeon Reesor owned land at con 9, lot 1. I believe he and his family ran the sawmill. Only property closest to the sawmill other than the David Whaley House.

Here's a few shots from that day

Great place, great shots. Funny, when you said 1 1/2 story in your info - just today I was reading up on some other stuff about historical houses and it said the reason so many of these old houses in Ontario are 1 1/2 story and not 2 full stories is that 2 stories were taxed much more heavily. So the family got their living space in the half upper, and they also didn't pay the larger 2 story taxes!

#8 is very nice. Any idea what the recess in #6 was for?

I wonder if they simply put siding over top of the original wood or if it was reconstructed at some point in time.

LOL!!! ooo okay...told ya's I was a little slow today eheheh.
umm okay soo right there in the ceiling is/was a skylight. The skylight of course has been broken and there has been quite the amount of water damage. Water damage throughout the entire house{expected lol} A lot of this old house didn't really use drywall like modern homes. In this case it was very thin shitty ply wood that was used. Soo it's the ceiling{plywood} that is just falling down. The structure it's self is a little more stronger and is still up there. ?lol

hahaahah lmao! - okay lol, umm well I believe this was the front door. soo there is a little mud section{I guess you can call it that?} between the door and the "recess". The floor is higher than the ground level outside.

Hey, Look!! A Skylight!

This is so.. Broken down and destroyed though. Very sad. Such a shame to see it like that. Thought plenty of fixing up work could help this location out plenty.

It's a real handymans special, eh? ;)
