Blowing up an abandoned house (Bowmanville)

Photos and story

CLARINGTON -- Bowmanville residents almost five kilometers away might hear a Holt Road house being blown up in a staged film explosion on Sunday, Jan. 29 around noon.

"We're detonating 75 different blasts in three stages in the course of 3.5 seconds.... If the house comes down in the blast, all the better for us. We think it may," said James Sled, special effects co-ordinator for NEXUS Canada, a special effects and fire arms company for the entertainment industry.

The explosion will be felt for several hundred metres, visible for 2.5 kms and heard for 4.5 kms, according to Mr. Sled.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, a group of special effects experts were busy rigging a dilapidated old house on Holt Road with explosives for a film project they would not name. This Week was the only media outlet to gain access to the film site.

Workers were busy breaking the glass in the windows, which will be replaced with clear plastic wrap. Small cannon-like pipes were aimed at front and side windows and the front door. In the pipes was a mixture of Styrofoam and bits of wood to simulate debris, explained Greg Cunnane, special effect pyrotechnician. The blast lifts and ignites fuel added to the mix to shoot flames through the window.

"It may look like a house blowing up, but it's all on the outside," said Mr. Cunnane, who started his career in military school and then became a firefighter before going into special effects.

Mr. Cunnane said six inches of sand are also packed into the cannon to slow the blast down enough to create a good effect for the cameras. Nitroglycerine, which looks like baby powder, will be put around the windows so they catch fire in the blast, he explained.

"(Nitroglycerine) is so safe (now). It takes 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit to blow it up," said Mr. Cunnane.

The white cement block building's last resident ran a boxing training facility on the main level and lived on the second storey. The walls still display newspaper and magazine clippings of famous boxers; a support for a punching bag is still mounted into the ceiling.

Mr. Sled said his company spent two days analyzing the site, two days of prep -- which included removing almost everything flammable -- and now are working on two days of pyrotechnics.

"It can be (dangerous) if you don't know what you're doing. The elements we deal with are extremely dangerous -- explosives and a hell of a lot of pressure," said Mr. Sled.

The Holt Road blast is a "sizable explosion" in the film and entertainment industry, according to Mr. Sled. The blast will be focused out the front, on one side and the roof of the home.

The explosion will be a "static shot" Mr. Sled explained, meaning there will be no actors running from the house to dive into the dirt as the building explodes. The actors -- whose identities are a closely guarded secret -- were in Clarington earlier this week to film in front of the house.

"Roll cameras, do a countdown and on zero - boom. We get one shot at this. This is a one-take here," said Mr. Sled.

Holt Road will be closed to the public from Bloor Street to Baseline Road on Sunday, Jan. 29 from 11 a.m. for approximately two hours. If there are high wind conditions on Sunday, the blast could be delayed.

The house will be left burning for some time for the cameras. A private fire suppression company has been hired to put the flames out.

Neighbours, local emergency services and Ontario Power Generation Darlington Nuclear have been warned about the detonation.

Watch tomorrow for continuing coverage on the Bowmanville blast.

I drove by Saturday morning and they had cleared out the front yard of all the debris and weeds. It was the cleanest I've ever seen that yard!

Oh man, couldn't they have just left the house alone and just blown up Our Lady Peace? Or at least blown up the house with Raine Maida inside?

I saw them live at the Vancouver Olympics unfortunately, I had teenage suicide attempts that were more pleasurable.

Dude I hear you. I have a ton of respect for Raine as a songwriter and producer but that voice is awful live, just awful.

I'm surprised they just left it so open and exposed. By mid afternoon the place was cleared out. I ran into a guy who was taking pics as well who said he knew the owner and that he'd just rented out the place before it became empty. Bless him, he was telling me to check out the back and ooh look at this as I'm trecking around mud in good shoes.

A possible OLP video? Really? *groan*

I can't see the city leaving this place so open for long. It will need to come down. The corner of the foundation at one corner has a big chunk missing.

The stills of the fire look sweet

And now for the real mystery...what happened to V. Hunt who once lived here and ran the boxing club? Leaving pictures of his family behind is not normal...has anybody looked into this?
