Googling "stand alone concrete closet" didn't work, what could this be?

*This is in New England, if that helps in any way.

While driving home today, I spotted this:

I had seen this structure before and never thought much of it, but now I'm quite curious. There is another one, almost identical and closer to me, but I forget where. The base is about 4ft x 5ft and it is around 7ft tall. There is no rubble surrounding it like something was demolished. What could I be looking at with this? I'm hoping secret tunnel entrance or something of that nature.

Sorry I forgot to mention, you can't see very well in the picture but it's made of concrete about six or so inches thick.

Like this?

Its nothing special, just a utility bunker. If I remember correctly this one is owned by the phone company. There are two on this road, one is owned by a phone company and the other by the electric company.

Definitely not. There is nothing nearby, it's much smaller. Just big enough to accommodate the door way. My initial size esitmate is way off I now realize. We're talking like 4 x 5 x 7.

Is there a gravel pit, quarry or mine nearby?

We forget that up to the 1960's you could buy dynamite at the local hardware store...with blasting caps. Often times these "bunkers" as you call it, housed the dynamite for quarrying operations.

My family are just poor old farm boys but we got enough almost-killed-me-dynamite stories to scary anyone. And yes we had one of these, but ours housed the boiler for our 75,000 bird chicken barn. When the wooden barn burned, all that was left was the concrete boiler house. Maybe that is what yours is???

There is a some sort of earth processing thing fairly close, but not close enough for that. Looking deeper into the woods, I get the sense that something was/is there, but I don't really have any evidence to support this.

A simple solution would be to go check it out for yourself.

Try using some unspeakable hook-shaped instruments and a unspeakable torque applying utensil to do the unspeakable to the unspeakable anti-exploring device.

If you know what I mean.

If it was a root cellar it'd probably be more in the ground than a stand-alone shack like that. It also clearly has no door, I'd just park and go look.

Seems too sturdy to be a shack, I'm only guessing but it probably has a sealed cover to a manhole. Could be part of some water table system, I'd be surprised if it goes anywhere.

I used to live near a long aqueduct. There were plenty of meaningless unused structures that allowed no entry.
