(Now) overdrawn at the horseshoes bank...

Pedestrian farmhouse beside a busy rural highway in the Huron County prairies. As I was driving by I noticed it's life's blood cables cut and the grass overgrown. I needed no other reason to turn around. Exposed property with no trees to speak of, and nothing to allow one to covertly make their way to the inside. Once there, I was surprised by how unspoiled it was. A calendar showed 2004/2005 but it certainly has not been abandoned that long. The interior was small, with clean lines and some of the ugliest paint/carpet color combinations I've seen.

First visit was when heading to my brother's in the middle-of-nowhere-land last Thanksgiving. For shits and giggles I thought I'd visit again last weekend when again en route to his place for his birthday. Figured 6 months with open windows and an open doorway would allow for some early stage decay, if not some signs of animal habitation. Results? No real change. I finished up in the house, and then went to the outbuilding which I did not bother with last October. As I was exiting, a blue van was parked not ten feet from me beside the house. I turned and nonchalantly walked back down the 75 meter driveway and into my copilot's waiting vehicle. She said it had been a man and woman, and that they had clocked her. Once parked the woman had gone straight into the house as did the guy once he had butted out his cigarette. So had I delayed or taken +/- other pics, or not gone to the outbuilding, chances are I would have been caught out. No idea of the nature of their visit. They weren't explorers according to my copilot. Perhaps scrappers, perhaps owners. Whatever...I won't be going back for some time...not until the place starts to decay.

Three of the pics in this set are before and after shots, i.e. from October and just last weekend, for comparison's sake.

What a cute little house. I agree with Vital, nice carpet!! And by that I mean, tacky as hell!

Sounds like you averted capture...

Nice!! Love how you did the double takes, with the open cabinet, moved the chair, etc.

While it may be pedestrian, it's yet another Victorian farm house in the 'Ontario Farmhouse' style that's empty. Seeing all these photos from house explorations on UER over the years has made me realize that they're unique and interesting parts of our cultural heritage, and that they're deteriorating and disappearing in alarming numbers.

Beautiful example of vernacular architecture. Shame about its hideous retrofittings.
