Alright, I get why It's such a stupid idea, but looking at some Australian drain pictures really interested me, too bad we don't have anything like that here, (massive drains, fresh air, etc..)

I went draining tonight, and yeah, it's not that great, first time was much better with the water frozen, this time I was waist deep in muddy water about 150ft into the drain, plus entry was a pain in the arse,

Well thanks for the info anyways, I might try it again later in the year with some proper wading gear, i.e. fishing pants, like the ones that go up to your chest?

Oh and, how the hell are you supposed to bring a camera while draining, I'd be much too afraid to drop it

It's happened to one of us here, not fun. I never bring my camera into drains as I don't have a tripod so it'd be pointless, however every once in a while you find that really cool one that warrants a picture. Draining can be fun, but you gotta really like it, and get a feel for it before you start going alone.

Inventor77 sheered his lens of his camera and the body went for a dunk. I believe he is still using it after (?) 4 years. And no it wasn't some fancy, waterproof pro body either.

On a scale of 1-10 how bad of an Idea is it to go swimming in a drain?
Theres no water flow at this particular one, and the exit from the other side is only about 15 feet away,
I'm a lifeguard and a rather strong swimmer, but I'm worried about any particular hazards to watch out for,
My reason for this crazy thought, the exitway from this drain leads into a rather interesting active site which I would very much love to explore, especially the drains under said location. I've posted about this place before if anyone is interested the place is by the 400 north of Rutherford road. ;)

shhhh, don't mention location specifics. I think that's frowned upon?

As for your swimming idea, why not bring a boat instead? And by boat, I mean any thing which makes swimming unnecessary. Inflatable dingy if you want to be fancy. Thing-which-somehwat-floats, if not.

lmfao a small inflatable boat eh? I think that might be a little hard to err... conceal?
Oh and I wasn't being specific, ;) just generally vague, theres like a million drains in my neighbourhood anyways, however I wanna point some other possible explorers in the right direction

I've swam across a concrete reservoir in an attempt to get into a drain once. What exactly are you trying to do, swim to get out of one?
I suppose it won't be too dangerous if you're outside the drain at that point. Is this water stagnant or flowing? If flowing, how strong is the current?

The water is only flowing very slightly, And I'm trying to swim out of the drain.

However I must assumer there are metal grates under the water at the exit also, I know the distance is only about 10-15ft because I walked the route above the ground
Therefore I have about max. 30ft to swim if the grates won't open, I've done about 40-or so yards of swimming underwater in a pool on one breath, however the water is quite murky, and this is probably a bad idea, any thoughts?

I'm confused now. At first I thought you simply had to swim across a small area to get to the next area where you could stand in the drain again. Now I am picturing swimming 15 feet underwater where there's metal grates and things to snag on.

This is what I was picturing:

and

presto! inflates in a few seconds. Not so cumbersome, will all fit in your pocket.

Swimming underwater for an approximate distance with exactly zero airspace above you, unidentified essentially invisible submerged objects where if you panicked you could possibly hit your head on unforgiving concrete.
I wouldn't, unless I had an air tank or I could see my safe exit from my known entrance.

Yeah, I agree. I thought you were going to have your head above water at least. Not only is that gross but you won't even see where you're going. And if there is a grate, which there probably is, how are you going to push it open if you're treading/under water? Don't think it's gonna work.

Is it wise? Absolutely not.

Is it do-able? Maybe...

Bring good swim goggles, a powerful submersible light, and a capable friend who is similarly equipped. Rope together AND to a secure anchor point in a safe location. Find a pool and do the best you can for practice runs beforehand to make sure you know what you're doing. Do the practice swims at night, if possible, dressed as you would be and carrying what you would because the dark is way more disorienting and you need to know how your clothes/gear will inhibit you BEFORE you've committed to something stupid.

Carefully evaluate everything you can and make a sound judgement given the environment and your own physical capabilities. If you're not SURE you can do it, don't.

Even better, just go back when the water is lower.

Without seeing the escapade you're planning, we can't properly evaluate it.

I'm a "Leave only footprints, take only pornography" kind of guy, myself.

If your not having fun in the drains, your not doing it right.... lol. If your gonna bring a camera get a relatively cheap point and shoot or find a mostly dry drain. good luck in the future and have fun.

So you're saying we should keep an eye on the news to hear about you drowning??
This seems beyond stupid to attempt.

Do you value your life less than a quick exit out of a drain?

This thread is just all kinds of stupid. It seems as though all he wants to do is get inside the property of Canada's Wonderland.

Do we really need to continue this discussion?

Went back today, and yeah the water was lower, no grate, and no it's not wonderland haha, there are much easier ways of going there if I want, mainly a staff ID

there's a 6-8 inch clearance at the top of the tunnel with air, I think I might wait out the dry season in the summer to go,

Swimming was a really stupid Idea, I must admit, meh...

I have a weird sleeping schedule because of school and work, So I'm often still awake around 4-5 A.m. I went around 3-ish last night( or morning I guess?)

Cold, damp, and all-around not too pleasant, but this time I went in with some decent wading boots from bass pro shops in vaughan mills, (really expensive though) and yeah the water level was a few inches lower,
