Any suggestions for Pittsburgh
< on 3/6/2012 10:34 PM >

I'm going on a road trip and driving through southwest PA on Monday March 12th. I'll be stopping past a couple locations along the way and was wondering if anyone in the area would be interested in meeting. Any suggestions on locations worth checking out or researching would be appreciated- please send me a pm. I'll be glad to do the same for anyone visiting Maryland.

Be sure to check out Dixmont State Hospital and the Frank R. Phillips power station, those are must-sees. ;)

But seriously... check your PM's.

Both of those sites are a hard find today...you could spend quite a while looking for them.

If you can find them though they're definitely worth a nice long writeup on here. There's also surprisingly little in the way of security or fences to get in your way.

Actually, the security at the Dixmont site is quite active. I drive past there all the time.

No freaking clue what they're trying to protect.

Remember when that whole hill collapsed and covered Rt. 60? A friend of mine actually went there after the collapse to take some photos but was chased away by over-zealous cops.

I've finally gone through the pictures from my trip. I want to thank everyone who sent me a pm with info and to those who I met along the way. I didn't post here because they are from several regions. Here is the link.

I'm taking a similar trip in a couple days for Infilnapolis. I'm looking forward to meeting more awsome people and seeing more kick-ass locations.

Wasn't Dixmont totally demolished a few years ago to make way for a Walmart?

Yes, and the hospital was holding the hill together, and after it was demolished there have been multiple landslides. Walmart has not been built.
