Lili appeared regularly in a cabaret that in the building that now houses the Foufounes electriques. Actually, on that little street there just south of Ste. Catherine (the one with the church on the corner) stands the last true "bordel" houses of Montreal. When the city tried to closed those down, they would get a warrant to put a lock on a specific door that went with a specific address. Bordel owners would then install a "false" door right next to the real door and would switch addresses (for example : civic number 96 (address on the warrant) would go on the false door and the real entrance door would become 96 1/2). If you looks at those 3 remaining houses on that small street, you still can see the "false" doors!!!

De Bullion was the famous red light district with girls showing off in the windows a la Amsterdam. One of the things that got cleaned up with the Drapeau era.
And no more cooking on the streets either, and so a million hot dog patate places were launched.

yeah montreal to prepare and sell food your establishment has to have running water, that is why cantines are not allowed to sell anything that is not sealed with a list of ingredients

of all the possibilities and temptations of time travel, I would have a hard time resisting going back to Montreal in the 40's-50's. The church was still all powerful yet the city was so ALIVE!

Drapeau killed lots of things (redlight, street food, chip wagons and wasn't he the one responsible for the dumbest decision ever : filling in of the Lachine Canal?). But he's still my choice without a question.

me too, the filling of the canal though was because the "seaway authority" got the responsibility for the canal. they closed the canal gradually starting at the east end of it as businesses stopped using it, finally in the end only the lachine locks were operable (the canal was open as far as monk blvd for some industries) the lachine, CP , gauron and lafleur bridges were the only ones operable
