     Interesting Features
Extremely large complex featuring a roof and three basement floors. Several old X-ray machines and scanners. Virus / Vaccine reseach facility equipment (large freezers, autoclaves). Morgue and Autopsy room in the basement. Operating rooms. Many cool graffiti.

ALARM WARNING: *** AVOID THE MAIN STAIRWAY AREA *** (any floor), it has an infrared motion sensor alarm (installed just before Christmas 2004). It notifies US Park Police and makes a lot of noise. Use the other stairs in the west and east aisles. If the alarm triggers, don't run out. Just go to the upper floors, stay stealth and if you see the Police coming, just wait 30 min until they leave. They rarely enter to look for someone.

***As of July 2008, Alarm is inoperable. On my visit walked from floor one to floor 6 with no alarms. The wires appeared cut on a number of floors. -Insainly Sound

     History
Built in 1875 and originally called the U.S. Marine Hospital, the Public Health Service Hospital initially tended the needs of merchant seamen. Eventually the hospital also cared for members of the U.S. Coast Guard and other governmental agencies, Native Americans and Vietnam refugees. In addition, important research on plague diseases was conducted here. A new hospital replaced the old in 1932, and two wings were added in the 1950s. After the hospital's closure in 1981, the Military Language Institute used part of the facility from 1982 to 1988.

     Future Plans
It will most likely be made into an apartment complex. These plans are slowly being executed as construction supplies are being stored inside the building.

Construction to begin 12/5/2009 with the demolition of the non-historic wings.

4.26.2021 - What remains is now luxury apartments, The Presidio Landmark. See web link below for rental info and pictures.
