 Overview
 Description
ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF GOTHIC architecture I have seen is not in the highlands of Scotland, nor is it sitting on a bluff along the Rhine. It stood here, along the Great Miami River. It had all the marvelous attributes of Gothic architecture -- the crosses, the tower, and the Norman windows. But what was most amazing, was the building's purpose. It was not a castle or a cathedral, but a steam plant.

There was no utilitarian justification to add such decoration or style to the Longworth steam plant, but somebody did. Somebody actually took the time and effort to design a building that would not only serve as a source of steam, but would also contribute visually to the Dayton landscape, and would serve as an inspiration to those who worked there or who passed by it.

This says something about America, what is best about our creativity, our ingenuity, and our imagination. Dayton and its citizens have been fortunate to have known such a work of art as this.

Whenever someone suggests we take the easy road, the simple way, I will pull out a photograph of the Longworth steam plant and tell them about a remarkable building I once knew that was built by the citizens of Dayton.

     History
The Longworth Street Steam Station, 305 South Perry Street, Dayton, Ohio, was formerly owned & operated by Dayton Power & Light, Co. (DP&L). Its being torn down, even as you read this.

Chaminade-Julienne Catholic High School has accepted a gift of 3.8 acres of land on Franklin Street from DP&L Co.

Chaminade-Julienne plans to demolish the old Longworth Steam Plant that sits on the land. The school intends to sell steel from the steam plant to take advantage of historically high steel prices and offset the cost of demolition.

The demolition cost has not been disclosed, but DDN reports the expenditure at $500K.

"We want to ensure C-J students receive the maximum benefits of such a gift," School President Daniel Meixner retorted.

The steam plant has stood vacant since closing in 1994. DP&L donated the land to the school in December, C-J spokeswoman Erika Daggett disclosed.

The school is exploring uses for the land as part of its ongoing campus development, Meixner mumbled.

Daggett rationalized wanton destruction of historically significant property by stating the school is considering many options for the land. While no idea has taken precedence, school officials have discussed the possibility of using it for athletic fields or facilities since Chaminade-Julienne does not have any athletic fields on campus, Daggett uttered.

The implosion of the building was scheduled for March 19, 2005. Plans were changed to kill it totally with the wrecking ball, though.

UPDATE: By April 25, 2005, the ground was level. Nothing but memories of a gothic structure remain.
