 Overview
 Description
A mostly closed but still maintained mental facility. The highest population was about 2500 patients. I haven't tried to get into the facility, however I imagine it is not easy. I plan to get permission to legally go photograph the interior of the hospital. Others have been given access in the past and it is structurally sound as it is still maintained.

***UPDATE Jun 09*** The building was briefly accessible for a few months in 2008. We were able to access the building twice. All together we spent 15 hours in the buildings, but even with that much time we didn't get to see it all. The first trip inside occured in August 2008. It was very interesting to see this piece of history before it was gone. The second trip was in Sept 2008 which didn't go as smoothly. We found ourselves in the building at the same time as some city employees and had to make a quick exit. We returned later in the day and ran into some high school students in the building who were caught by the police on their way out. The students apparently ratted us out to try to save themselves. The police were forbidden to enter the building and could only wait outside. Apparently our patience outlasted theirs as a couple hours later the police gave up and left. A few weeks later we attempted a third visit but all of our entry points had been welded shut and we never had an opportunity to get in again. November 2008 the building was fenced off and abatement began. June 2009 the last portions of the kirkbride have been demolished.
***UPDATE Jul 05*** The facility is now completely closed and secured. The first 3 floors have their windows boarded, a monitored alarm system is in place, and CCTV is around the facility. *** End Update *** Nothing has changed in the mothballed areas. The original equipment is still in place. The place looks the same inside as it did in 1971 when it was officially closed as a mental hospital. Minimal upkeep and repairs are made to the facility.

     History
The CBC summed it up well:

"The Weyburn Mental Hospital opened in 1921 and quickly became one of Canada's most notorious psychiatric institutions. It was the site of lobotomies, electric shock therapy, and some of Canada's controversial LSD experiments. It was here that Dr. Humphrey Osmond coined the word "psychedelic." Virtually anywhere across Canada, if you mentioned you were from Weyburn, there would always be somebody who would know about the hospital and say, 'Oh,' and make some comment about either your own mental health or the mental health of the community, or just a joke about mental illness," remembers Schultz. In 1971, the Weyburn Mental Hospital closed its doors and patients were transferred to other institutions."

     Future Plans
    **Update 6/13/09** Buildings demolished.
**Update 10/18/08** Slated for demo. Check new media link.

The government announced in July 2003 that a facility is going to be built to transfer the remaining patients out the this aging facility. At which point the government will most likely demolish the site.
