This was a real old school style grocery store. I used to shop here and thought it was quaint. They had the freshest fruit and veggies in the neighbourhood.

As a very old grocery store there is employee graffitus on just about every wooden pole in the back rooms. Quite a few broken cash registers and electric scales. If you look around enough you'll find a set of false teeth. All is now gone...to quote Joni Mitchell's 'Big Yellow Taxi' "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

Protected now by a cloak of invisibility

This was Laporte Gardens Fruit and Vegatable store and had been since 1969 until gave it up, and it was sold to Payless Foods in 2002. They in turn ran it to the ground in less than a year, it just wasn't Laporte's so people stopped going. Laportes still operates the large garden centre and green houses out on the eastern end of St Joseph past Trim Rd, and they aren't hurting for business. After the grocery closed down, a civic group, (Kiwanis Club) ran a Haunted house for the Halloween season called "Haunted Hamlet" It flopped, it was lame and and at a cost of $2.50 it wasn't worth it. The property is being leveled shortly for redevelopment.

The store and lot, including Mr. Laport's house (vacant & unexplored) have been sold to a developer and will be plowed under shortly to rise as bland row housing much like the places that are growing in the field next door. As of May 23rd, 2004 the house still stands. If it is still standing on May 31, I'll get pictures of the interior, if not...tough luck
