     History
The sterling Hotel was built on the site of the Music Hall. Originally known as The Algonquin, the hotel was built in 1898. Later in the year it was changed to The Sterling. In 1927 the Plaza Hotel, a 12 story building near the The Sterling was bought by The Homer R. Mallow Hotel Corporation and was made part of the Sterling. In 1912 the tower was added.
The Sterling Hotel was known for its elegance & elite clintele. The Depression was the downfall for the magnificant hotel. Two famous people who have stayed at the The Sterling was Frank Sinatra & Sugar Ray Robinson (heavy weight boxer) The Hotel was bought & sold a few times until the 80's. Also, the rooms were leased to college students and people on limited incomes. In 1998 the hotel closed its doors for good. The owners (Susquehanna Partners) didn't pay an electric bill of $225,000 and back taxes totalling about 2 million dollars. That is when the City of Wilkes~Barre stepped in & condemned the entire Hotel & businesses that rented spaces in the buildings. The Sterling Hotel is a total of 3 different buildings.

     Future Plans
CityVest is planning to restore the structure in regards to the Riverfront Project: The tallest of the buildings has been leveled, the sign from the roof gone, and the inside of the remaining building is completely gutted and inaccessable anyways.
