     History
This building was a rehabilitation center of some sort before 1997 when it was shut down. In the summer of 2001, social housing activists took over the Louis Hyppolyte Lafontaine mansion on Overdale in downtown Montreal in the middle of a housing crisis. The reason for the Louis H take over was because it was the only building left standing by a developper who kicked a group of people out to build condos on the site, the houses were torn down but nothing was ever built, there is a parking lot on the site to this day. The city of Montreal officials (the Bourque administration) negociated with squatters to give them another building to live in, for at least 6 months to 2 years, the Centre Préfontaine. The squatters/activists moved in Centre préfontaine with help of city workers loading buses of stuff that was brought to Overdale over the week. 2 months later the riot police kicked everyone out of centre Préfontaine. See Eve Lamonts Squat! movie for a good look into this story. 2 and a half years later, this working condition building is still boarded up and people still sleep on the streets of Montreal.
