Originally started out in 1889 as an Edison DC power station called "Sub G", built to help carry the load from another station nearby. When built, it was a 2 story building, but a 3rd story was added in 1910. The plant got into the steam business by accident when the engineers found that the steam that powered the reciprocating engines to generate electricity could then be passed through mains to be used again for heating by nearby stores and businesses. The plant continued to generate electricity until 1919 when a new plant that generated AC power was opened nearby, but continued to operate as a steam generating plant for another 10 years. In 1929 the engines were removed. A high pressure steam line from the Grand Avenue Station was put in its place, and from that moment on the Wall Street Station served as a pressure reducing and desuperheating station until its decommission sometime in the 60's. The 3 story building was razed in 1961, but the basement station was left mostly intact because it was still in use. A cover was built over the basement level, and the surrounding area was turned into a parking lot. During the plant's DC power days, it fed 4,300 kilowatts into the grid, and had 7 rotary converters. In addition, "Sub G" had a 150 cell electric storage battery, rated at 1,900 kw, 10,000 amps for 20 minutes. The battery was not of sufficient capacity to carry the DC load for enough time to be of any real value though.
