  • falling into the ocean?
  •  Interesting Features
You'll need a helicopter to access portions of the old Seven Mile and Bahia Honda bridges, as spans have been removed to prevent access (and allow boats to pass). How a bicycle found its way onto the west end of the abandoned portion of the old Seven Mile Bridge is a mystery.

     History
These bridges - the two largest pictured here and many shorter spans between Islamorada and Boca Chica Key - are all that remains of the "Overseas Railroad", the Florida East Coast Railway Key West Extension. The railroad was built between 1904 and 1912, and operated for 23 years until it was wiped out by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. The right of way and bridges were then converted for use by the Overseas Highway. By 1982, these narrow highway bridges were replaced by modern structures.
     Media Coverage
Island needs fire-safety repairs mentions that the portion of the Seven Mile Bridge out to Pigeon Key will soon close for reconstruction.
