Wikipedia ~ "The Old Portland Underground, better known locally as the Shanghai Tunnels, is a group of passages in Portland, Oregon, United States, mainly underneath the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood and connecting to the main business section. The tunnels connected the basements of many hotels and taverns to the waterfront of the Willamette River. They were originally built to move goods from the ships docked on the Willamette to the basement storage areas, allowing businesses to avoid streetcar and train traffic on the streets when delivering their goods." The address/GPS coordinates below is where you can pick up a tour. Recommend buying tickets in advance. The 1st weblink listed is the official tunnel tour website.

If you love the underground, then tunnels are all you need to know! Otherwise, the tour group has a collection of mostly cheesy tourist mock scenes and garbage down there....

Shanghai Tunnels of the city of Portland are infamous for kidnapping and claim to be the source of the term Shanghaied. The lore goes that from 1850-1941, able-bodied men were drugged, dropped through trap doors, held in underground holding cells, and later sold to unscrupulous sea captains for "blood money". However, historians have long disputed these claims and have stated that although the practice of shanghaiing was sometimes practiced in Portland, as elsewhere, there is no evidence that the tunnels were used for this. The lore continues today as a mere ruse to sell tour tickets. None the less - if you love the underground it is still pretty cool to see!
