The first sanatorium in Scotland and based on a German sanatorium, Nordrach-in-Baden, the building was also referred to as 'Nordrach-on-Dee'. The site was chosen due to its sunny and mild location (for Scotland anyway). The hospital was constructed with Black Forest timbers - which I suppose is fair since it was a German design. The hospital closed as a TB sanatorium in 1928 until it was re-opened six years later as a hotel with the following write-up: "The Royal Deeside Hotel is in every way a perfect holiday centre. For sportsmen too, who are attracted by moor or river, it is an ideal centre. Within the grounds are secluded walks, a mashie course, putting greens and facilities for lawn games; tennis, bowls and all facilities for shooting and fishing. The winter climate is unusually mild." Strangely no mention of it being a TB sanatorium six years before. With WW2 in swing the hospital was used to house troops, and afterwards it was used again as a TB sanatorium, but limited to servicemen and women. It became a convalescent hospital in 1955 but again reverted to its role as a sanatorium in 1964 during the Aberdeen typhoid epidemic. Its last use began in 1990 as an old people's home and the building has been abandoned since 1995. Glen O' Dee Hospital was gifted to the people of Scotland by the Red Cross but is now being sold by the NHS to the highest bidder. Burned to the ground by a fire 10/14/16.
