     Interesting Features
The Opera House has a wrap around balcony, common to the formal Opera Houses of Europe.

The Orillia Opera House, and in particular the Gordon Lightfoot Auditorium has two distinct ghosts; 'The Piano Player' and the second one is more of a haunting or a 'burp' in time as a 100 year old curtain call is repeated.

     History
    Excerpts from the website http://www.operahouse.orillia.on.ca/

Toronto architectural firm of Gordon and Halliwell awarded tender in 1887. Building was completed by the end of 1895 at a cost of $25,000.00. Ground floor housed the farmers market and Council Chamber while the second floor, known as the Opera House, consisted of a auditorium seating 905 seats with a gallery on three sides and a stage with two dressing rooms. In addition to the two round towers at the east end, there was a tall square tower on the south side, over the entrance to the Council Chamber.

In July of 1915, Fire destroyed a large part of the building; only the heavy masonry walls, the basement and the main floor structure remained. The Toronto firm of Burke, Horwood and White were retained to prepare plans for the reconstruction.

The work was completed in 1917. The tall tower on the south side was not rebuilt. The Council Chamber was relocated on the west.

In 1958 a new entrance was constructed on the east end of the building and in early 1980's the first of the two phases of restoration/renovation of the public areas, the addition of a public elevator and air-conditioning to the public areas.
